Marvel's Top 50 Greatest Slugfests of All Time (1961-1999)!!!

Marvel's Top 50 Greatest Slugfests of All Time!! (1961-1999)

This article I wrote back in the beginning of 2000. I figured the end of the world was coming so it was time to write a complete and comprehensive listing of the top 50 greatest Marvel Slugfests ever to grace a funnybook. Now it's almost been 12 years since I wrote this and new brawls have come out that could've cracked the top 50 (Thor vs Superman from the JLA/Avengers #2 in 2003 comes to mind) but I've been out of hardcore comic collecting since 2003 so it hasn't been updated and my expertise is not what it used too be. But I'm still confident to say that this list is still very accurate.

Now judging how I rank a slugfest is based on the interest/action/excitement/destruction/savagery/will/intensity/outcome of the fight alone. The stories were not taken into consideration...it's just pure battle baby!!! So give it a look and see if your greatest Marvel scrap made the cut!! And remember, we have Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to thank everyday for being the founding fathers of the comic slugfests. Without them everything would be 50's DC camp...

I think the Hulk vs the Thing will always be my personal favorite. Lord knows I played more than a few rounds of that with my Mego-versions back in the day!

Hulk vs the Thing is my all time favorite rivalry.

It's like two super heavyweight boxers going at it toe-to-toe...only...the Hulk is a world class fighter like Mike Tyson...and the Thing is like a very brave journeyman who can take a helluva beating...yet keeps on fighting with nothing but heart...I love good 'ol jolly Ben Grimm...

If you're opening it up to non-Marvel slugfests....

Superman vs. Doomsday (Superman Vol.2 #75)
Superman vs. Muhammad Ali (All-New Collectors' Edition C-56)
                Batman vs. Bane (Batman #497)

The Hulk vs Thing match ups remain my favourite Marvel battles, too.
The best ones were such genuinely iconic fights. Classic stuff.

Here's another favorite..: Fantastic Four #63.

While it's not on the top of anyone's list, it's still ol' Ben Grimm at his best ("Awww... SHADDUP!")..:

Hulk vs Thor from one of the later issues, the# escapes me it was an "untold tale" the entire book one huge fight, hulk gets bored and leaves at the end. this will forever be my favorite slugfest. outside the realm Dragonball Z has fights that last 3-4 episodes! thats a long fight!

Sounds kinda like ROCKY vs. APOLLO to me.

BTW...not that I'm Mr. Comicbook, but that^^^ "Marvel Vs." was the first
I thought of when I saw the title....of course if it was DC it'd be
                          "SUPES/CAP MARVEL".

Now THAT's a cool tag team idea, eh?

                          HULK/THING vs. SUPES/CAP. MARVEL
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

That would be Hulk vs Thor from Thor #385 which is ranked #15 on this list. The Hulk proved he didn't need to have a hammer to pound on Thor. It was awesome because Thor was a bloody mess but still wanted to fight. The Hulk got tired of beating on him and leaped away. Stan Lee wrote the script while Jim Shooter wrote the plot.

                            Great stuff!!
