Confirmed: Next Season is Last for Smallville

With Chloe out of the pic, I do want to see a novel new twist on the Clark/Lois dynamic with her as his confidant and partner in a very real sense as they have been portrayed in the comics since their engagement/marriage.

Thus when she finally writes that "Superman!" article following his public debut, she is actually in on it with Clark.

Well in the season finale, Ma Kent left him the suit in a box. They showed the reflection of the emblem on the blue shirt in his eye.

If it was a reflection, then it's a Bizarro suit. The emblem in his eye was a forwards 'S', not a reverse, which means it is a backwards 'S'.
And that is the only glimpse I've seen of the show since the third episode. It was by mistake...

I think and hope he will don the suit early on.....but if the future glimpse from the finale was his first appearsance as Supes then it means he will not don it until the end

Interesting, and very rare interview with Tom Welling about Season 10 posted on Superman Homepage. Sounds like he is not totally opposed to putting on the suit...just scared.

I'm going to miss Chloe, too. She's the only other actor that's been on for the whole run of the show (except for a few episodes missed when she was supposedly dead).
She's come a long way as Clark's confidant and friend.

^Yep, I'll miss Chloe. It's odd that she has been the only surviving season one cast member, besides Clark. And we all know Chloe isn't in the comics, so all bets are off for her character. It's long been suspected that her death may be what pushes this version of Clark into fully accepting his Superman identity.

^ They were going to try and bring Chloe into the DCU proper but that plan failed I believe....

They were, but hit a roadblock since two big parts of Chloe's character "reporter" (at the time) and "childhood friend" were already taken by Lois Lane and Lana Lang. They tossed around a few things to retool Chloe for the comics but eventually just decided to drop the idea.

If he puts on the suit, I agree with Huedell that he will likely don the suit in the last few seconds of the last episode. I expect we will not even see Tom Welling wear it in any familiar pose for all of us to see but likely flying away from the viewer like off into the sunset or the traditional flying into orbit like in the Chris Reeve films.

Based on comments that the series creators and Tom Welling have made in the past it seems to me no-one connected with this show ever had any intention of embracing the costume or the character really becoming Superman. They have kept the lead out of spandex for a ten year run and they likely won't have him don the costume for the last season except briefly; if at all. Welling probably sees wearing a Superman costume as a sort of end-of-career move. He would be labeled as yet another actor who played Superman-tho that would not be true.
