What is Alan Davis' best work?

Do you think he does his best stuff at Marvel, DC or his early Brit stuff for 2000 AD and Warrior?

Is he best when he's paired with a writer or allowed to do his own stuff?

    Which are his best creations?

Davis' best stuff is his Captain Britain/Excalibur stories. If he isn't available to do his thing, Marvel shouldn't publish any stories w/ Capt Britain (although I haven't read the most recent series.) I liked Gatecrasher & TechNet as villains who could be humourous without being silly.

I loved his 'Tec run with Mike W. Barr. It is HIGHLY underrated. They manged to keep the flavor of the classic Finger/Sprang Batman stories, and make them modern. Too bad their collaboration ended after just one chapter of Batman: Year Two.

His JLA: The Nail minis are some of the best Elseworlds. Great stuff.

Davis can do no wrong with me.

Although didn't Barr and Davis get another kick at the can together with the Year 2 sequel Full Circle?

^ Yeah but I liked them better on the 'Tec stuff instead of revisting the Reaper and Year Two....

Exactly my thoughts, too. Back then, it was the first issue I read when getting home from the shop.
                  It's all good!

I've been reading the Modern Masters book at it just appears that it was bad timing on the part of Barr and Davis that their run ran straight into Batman's Grim 'n Gritty period. Particularly since Davis likes to draw the surreality of the classic villains.

It just shows how ridiculous editorial and continuity can be that basically what drove Davis off of finishing Year 2 was the fact that the Joe Chill's gun in that one panel of Year 1 didn't match his gun, so instead of redrawing that one panel of Year 1, Giordano redrew an entire issue's worth of that gun in Year 2.

^ REALLY? That is interesting. I need that Modern Masters book!!!

The Barr/Davis run on Tec is up there with the Englehart/Rogers for me. Unfortunately, it's largely forgotten.

                        Alan Davis

His work on Comico's "Maze Agency" was great, I love his work on Excalibur and The Fantastic Four, but my favorite of his so far is "JLA:The Nail" 1 & 2. He draws nearly every super hero in the DC stable and does an incredible job at it. His Aquaman looks fantastic and he should be drawing him every month.

^ Davis drew Aquaman covers during the most recent run didn't he? Prior to the whole One Year Later stuff when they 1st relaunched the book with the Sub-Diego subplot?

I had completely forgotten that he was originally on The Maze Agency with Barr. I remember it mostly being Adam Hughes breakthrough job.

Did you guys know that Davis was also the artist originally slated to do the 80's Aquaman mini with the Ocean Camo costume? There are some sketches in the Modern Masters book. He apparently REALLY wanted to do that book because he was a big Aquaman fan, but DC wanted him on a higher profile book like Batman and the Outsiders (on the newsprint series during the year of the Baxter series launch).

They said he had done the first issue before he was pulled. i would love to se those!
