I had never seen the issue where Arthur Jr dies before... I didn't realize it was so brutal and cruel! This could easily be a nineties era comic. How did folks react to this in the seventies? How did they get away with killing a baby during those comics code times? One would think one of the retired school teachers that veted the comics would have had some objections to this one!

I'm thinking the death of Arthur Jr. was the first "shouldn't have gone there" in comics. Aquaman was a crabby butthead for the next 15 years, and then he became Captain Hook the Barbarian.

Being a king, having a wife and a son set Aquaman apart from his peers. It was a shame they threw that all away for shock value.

At the time I don't think it effected much....if memory serves it happened in Adventure Comics and then Aquaman left the book shortly after to relaunch his own title, which didn't last very long either. Aquaman wasn't a top seller so I'm sure most people didn't even notice...

I was thinking the same thing. I loved the way Arthur was depicted in Ross' Justice. He's easily my favorite powered DC hero.

And despite the jokes, it seems a lot of people (including Seth McFarlane) have a soft spot for the Sea King.
