Captain Marvel serials - are these worthwhile?

I had never seen these until I stopped at WalMart to kill some time yesterday. The DVD is only $7.50. The special effects sound interesting. Has anyone watched the Captain Marvel serials? Are they any good? The actor's costume looks pretty neat.

Yes, The Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941) was the first and best of all the serials including; Batman (both of them from 1943 and 1949), The Phantom (1943), Captain America (1944), and Superman (both of them from 1948 and 1950).

So if your into this type of nostalgia I would recommend this one well before any of the others. Captain Marvel is the only one I own.

      Hope this helps.

Wasn't the first serial, but it is the best. The Batman, Phantom, Superman, Cap, Spy Smasher all are fun stuff.

                Heck, yeah!

More fun and adventure in any single episode than in most feature comic book adaptations.

I own the set myself, and have watched it with the more than once!

This far beyond cool. I'm halfway through this serial and am very impressed. I'm a Shazam fanboy anyway, but I never got around to watching this till last month. Highly recommended.

Maybe I should have been more clear. It was the FIRST SUPERHERO serial made. And yes, it is by far the best. You have to love how Captain Marvel actually kills gangsters in it. Plus the flying scenes are not that bad for the times and much better than the two Superman serials that had animation for Superman flying...yuck.

It's funny how Captain Marvel was the first Superhero ever on the big screen and he doesn't have a movie today out.

This is at Wal-Mart? I've waffled about buying this for years. I've heard nothing but good things. I think the Superman serials have a certain charm, but Alyn plays it really broad, as compared to Reeves just a few years later. The Batman serials are really low-rent. As much as I love Batman and Robin, I have a hard time watching them.

Well back then Captain Marvel was a huge seller on the newstands....today he can't seem to hold a series (or editorial direction) together at DC

BUY IT!!!!!! This Serial OWNS!!!!!! One of the best Republic Serials ever and why Captain Marvel at the time outsold Superman. Tyler who also plays the Phantom in another republic Serial is brutal and No nonsense shooting and throwing Villans off roofs. Plus the Costume is dead on to his first appearance and Tyler looks like GA Cap. The Flying scenes are fabulous and inventive for the time.

Leaves the Columbia Superman serial in the dust although I do like Kirk Alyn as Superman......
