I guess he didn't have much choice at the time. Uncanny X-Men #200 still is a great issue. Magneto's original attempt at rehabilitation did create a much more complex character, particularly when they showed his time in the Nazi concentration camps. He's come back over to the X-Men in recent issues, and it's not necessarily out of nowhere that he's really had to create an incredible show of faith in order for the X-Men to buy in.
