    JMS' Superman #701

Superman No More? Bleeding Cool Comic Book News and Rumors

he solicitation to his first issue Superman #701 reads “After the devastating events of WAR OF THE SUPERMEN, how can Superman possibly continue his battle for Truth, Justice and the American Way?”. The book is part one of the arc “Grounded”. But what does it all mean?

Apparently, the Man Of Steel is going to drop his Superman identity in an attempt to be a better man and to better relate to humanity. The story will follow his journey as he walk from one side of the USA to other other, trying not use his powers. One part Midnight Nation, one part Forrest Gump, two parts Amazing Spider-Man #50 and Superman II? It does seem to fit the theme of this gorgeous John Cassaday cover…

Well, at least he's not going to reveal his secret identity so the next writer won't have that to undo.

Sounds more than a bit like Bill Bixby's Hulk show.

I'm looking forward to JMS' approach to the Man of Steel but I gotta say I'm hoping this "Grounded" storyline is a very short arc...

I wish Casaday would do a Superman book.

It actually sounds interesting, but I hope it's not a way to get Superman and Lois further apart, and toward divorce. I know JMS was against Quesada's mandate to break them up, but he's the type DC would let do whatever with the character if he wanted. He's a "name" writer from another field. They give their first born children to them.

I can't forgive him for the other godawful things he did to Spidey during his run. Spider-totem, eatiing people, the whole Iron Spider , secret ID reveal thing. Crap.

SO true....I remember the Allan Heinberg/Wonder Woman debacle from a few years back...Oh and also that Jodi Picault Wonder Woman crap.....

I like JMS but he has a tendency to leave projects abruptly (see Supreme Power, Spider-Man, Thor....) And what's happening with The Twelve over at Marvel?

                    Okay...

The current Superman title features Mon-El and Guardian, no Supes.

Action comics has two characters I've never read before, no Supes.

THis planned story has Superman, but not his powers. He's just going to wander around fixing flat tires for stranded motorists and getting to know America.

Maybe while he's hitching a ride in Arizona Billy Batson and Mentor could pick him up in their Winnebago.

So, he stops wearing the cape and says... tired of being Kryptonian, I think I'll crossdress and act human for a while...I need to know about America!

Uh... just circle the globe a couple of times and use your vision and hearing powers. There. You know what's happening in America, Afghanistan, Borneo and Tibet while you're at it.

I'm looking forward to JMS' run. While I agree some of the stuff with Spidey wasn't so great, most of it was pretty good to me. I enjoyed his run on Thor and Fantastic Four.

But I do question having Superman walk the Earth like a latter day Cain from Kung Fu after about a year and a half of not having him as Superman.

I liked a lot of what was going on in the Superman titles, particularly the Krypton book. Ruka's stuff in action was well written but not Superman. Robinson's Mon-El and Guardian was boring. The Jimmy Olson and Lois stuff he did a sub-plots was far more interesting.

The current Superman-Legion-Zod-Brianiac-Luthor story is very cool and the War of the Superman looks solid as a follow-up, but what I really wanted from the shift in creators was some good ol' classic Superman.

I have faith this arc will be good. JMS is supposed to be a huge Superman fan. But like Anthony, I hope it's short.

Also, I think the tidbit of info that started this thread came from Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool News. I enjoy reading his stuff but he's more of a provocateur than a reporter or journalist. There is usually grains of truth in what he writes but also a lot of opinion, supposition and rumor. He writes to provoke responses more than to let people know what is going on.
