I'd never heard of Detective Chimp until Bill Willingham put him in his mystical team book whose name I forget. And he has a great cameo in Greg Rucka's Checkmate along with the rest of his team.

Was he a cheezoid character Willingham rescued from obscurity or just a character he made up that just seems to be?

He's awesome either way.

Detective Chimp was a character from the old Rex the Wonder Dog comic back in the 1950s. Oddly enough, it's Carmine Infantino's favorite strip from all the work he's done over the past 60 plus years!

Before his Shadowpact revival, I think he was in a Swamp Thing Annual guest starring all of the DCU simian characters.

I keep hoping at least one of the Blue Devil action figures gets packaged with a little PVC Detective Chimp (with the Sherlock Holmes cap, and not the blue leotard).

I had higher hopes for that series. Willingham's DCU work has been a bit disappointing compared to how much I like Fables.

I've only read the first two arcs. Are there more? I pretty much only get trades nowadays, so I'm way not up with anything.

Do you mean Shadowpact or Fables?

Shadowpact was one of those series that Willingham jumped off of and gave to his Jack of Fables writing partner Matthew Sturges. I think there was a third trade before the title was cancelled. It just kind of petered off after a fairly strong start with the initial countdown miniseries. Of Willingham's DC work, I like his run on Robin best.

There are probably over a dozen Fables books now, including OGN's and the Novel, with the main title heading towards issue 100 and Jack of Fables at 50.

Jack of Fables really meanders at times, but I've always found the main Fables title to be solid.
