Batman:The Brave & the Bold: Chill of the Night

Okay, I know we have multiple B&B threads floating around on this board, but this episode deserves its own.

    Mild SPOILERS of course

After all the hype, the hints, the build-up...it far exceeded it. Wow. One of the greatest moments in Batman history, rivaling the best of BTAS/TNBA. I kept waiting to hear the traditional BTAS Batman theme music in the background.

It is much darker than any B&B episode yet. I read an interview with James Tucker over at World's Finest, and he said they had to change their whole color palette to make it work. And it shows! But there are still moments that say "Hey, it's B&B, just a 'very special episode'". Like that great "old chum" line, for instance.

Man, Mark Hamill creeped me out as the Spectre. I couldn't even tell it was him. I know they did some minor effect work to his voice, but he sounded like he was speaking from beyond the grave! Kevin Conroy was great as the Phantom Stranger too. It did seem weird to hear him addressing "Batman" and not being him, but now I have a voice to go with the Phantom Stranger too.

Of course Adam West and Julie Newmar were a great bit of stunt casting. In effect, West WAS Batman once more. And Richard Moll got in on the BTAS reunion as Moxxon. It almost sounded like he voiced Two-Face for just a second (or two, probably).

It hit me after I watched this. Four deaths were depicted/alluded to. WOW! BTAS couldn't get away with this at all, which is why you never saw Batman's origin on screen (just vague hints in flashbacks). It was all tastefully done of course, and they were all integral to the story.

When I originally heard of this episode, I suspected it was an adaptation of "To Kill A Legend" from Detective #500, where the Phantom Stranger offers Batman the chance to prevent his parent's murder on an alternate earth. But Paul Dini (there's another BTAS guy!) wrote a very original story combining "The First Batman" with the classic 1948 "The Origin of Batman" and maybe a little of their reinterpretation in "The Untold Legend of the Batman" mini-series. I was far from disappointed.

I could keep on gushing, but I'll stop. This show keeps topping itself. I have had about 5 "Best Episodes Ever" and they just keep getting replaced. I'm not sure how they can top this one, but I'll love to watch them try!!!

Yeah, it's pretty great all around. So many perfect touchs.

I finally showed it to my kids last night, they caught all of the voices (save for the Spectre) although my son recognized Adam West from "Fairly Odd Parents". It's really cool that you've never seen Bruce Wayne's face up until this reveal, an insanely good episode of an increasingly great show.

I LOVED the Spectre! He was sooooo "Darth Vader" in trying to get Bruce to go over to the dark side (and the irony in having him voiced by Mark Hamill). And I thought it was cool with the little grin the Spectre had while uttering his lines.

And anytime you can get Adam West and Julie Newmar involved in a Bat-project....What more can I say....

How cool was the teaser with Zatanna and Abra Kadabra? I love the fact that their hands are unbound by continuity restrictions. Some of these pairings/match-ups are just inspired.

Consistently the BEST version of Batman going today! Who needs the funny books?

I loved the episode, great Dini work.

It sounded like Kevin Conroy as PS, I didn't recongnize Hamill...

What did you all think of Poison Ivy's design? I was surprised...

They really need to have Paul write more episodes. He's great at writing comedy and serious stuff.

Dini and Denny O'Neil are my favorite Batman writers. Dini comics are good, but his work in Batman animation are my favorite version of the character.

The series is great. The choice of art style allows them to really do any type of story they want. Chill of the Night is pretty dark for a kid-flavored show, but just think how many kids will be interested in and maybe a little scared by the depiction of the Spectre in the cartoon.

              I love me some Spectre.

My son was uber-stoked by the revelation of Bruce Wayne's face. It's been bugging him for some time now. A perfect place to reveal it.

I liked Poison Ivy's design. It was different, but then again, Dick Sprang never drew Ivy, so they could go off in their own direction.

What I loved about the revelation of Wayne was it was taken straight out of the comic, Batman 48 or 47 from the late 1940s. There were so many little nods to the golden-age era of Batman. Just very cool stuff for comics fans as well as being enjoyable for kids.

It was a great episode i thought i was watching a missing episode from BTAS more than BATB

I've been stoked so far by DC's animated handling of The Spectre absolutely always loved the character.

Great episode. Surprisingly dark for Brave and Bold!

                      Loved seeing Alfred.

Such a great homage to folks who have guided Batman in the past.
