Does anyone have a definitive list of Mystery Men/ Superheroes from 1938 thru '55?

I imagine Roy Thomas Knows, but with all the companies that produced comics in those days, has anyone ever come up with a definitive list of characters from the Golden Age? Specifically the Mystery Men and Superhero men and women.
I'm on a Golden age custom fixation with the JSA and All-Star Squadron and just wondering how many might be out there over all.

In Squadron DC says they put everyone and got almost 70 characters with a handful of retro-activated ones thrown in as well. so i would love to see just how high the total would get to for less than 20 years worth of comics.

That's one of my favorite sites. I have a couple of books on the subject too, but damned if I can remember them right now.
