I'd say Superman showed a 3rd dimension of himself in the classic "Whatever Happend to the Man of Tomorrow" by Alan Moore and Curt Swan. When Superman exposed himself to Gold Kryptonite because he killed Mxyzptlk, he was taking his oath not to kill to it's obvious conclusion. He felt he didn't deserve his power if he violated his oath.

But yeah, the ending would have worked better for II and made Supes look less selfish. Lots of tragic pathos in the Donner Cut, which is why it's superior to the Donner/Lester version.

Personally I thought that world spin was fantastic. I thought Ok Superman can do that and he loved Lois so he disobeyed his Father to save his love ok I can live with that.

I was 13 and was in Heaven the night I saw that movie New years eve 78 in Times Square. For me it works and I Leave it there........what was silly and just flat out stupid was Lester's "Kiss" I remember seeing that and saying what the freek Superman can't do that!!!!
