What I wouldn't do to have this Spectre page...

Doing my weekly original art search...I came across this AMAZING!!! Spectre page.

    It's from this auction:

ALL STAR 9, STUNNING RARE SPECTRE SPLASH PAGE, 1942!!! - eBay (item 160401430428 end time Feb-14-10 20:00:39 PST)

I have a couple of Spectre pages...but nothing like this. Time to go sell a Kidney or 2

As I understand it, whole pages from All-Star are extremely rare. To have such a powerful and well-drawn one is even rarer! The Spectre was depowered shortly after this period, so it's even rarer still to have him looming large!

      Great stuff!

Funny thing is...usually you'll see just panels from golden age comics. From what I've read and heard panels from the original art back in the 40's and 50's were cut up and given away to fans who wrote into comic book companies. I remember a couple of years ago a panel from a 40's Sensation Comics issue that had Wonder Woman in it go for something like $800 on ebay...A PANEL!! I couldn't believe it.

BTW, if you couldn't tell by my gushing...Spectre is my favorite of all the DC characters. Haven't really cared for what they ended up doing to good old Jim Corrigan...but IMHO he's the ONLY Spectre.

It's even worse than that. In the late 60s, DC asked interns to cut up comic pages to make it easy for them to be INCINERATED!!! A young Marv Wolfman was one of the teenagers who took it upon himself to cut the pages up into tiers, and sneak some of them out. DC was purging pages from their entire history at that point. Wolfman managed to save quite a few Golden and Silver Age pages in the days before art was returned to the artist.

WOW!!! It ended at over $12,000. Congrats to whoever won that page...

As for what happened to art back in the day...this is a great read:
