Who is a Better Arch Enemy for Spider-Man?

Venom or Green Goblin? Which version of Venom, and which version of Green Goblin?

As much as I like Norman, i always feel like the stakes are way higher when it comes to Harry putting on that rubber mask. Particularly during that underrated Spectacular Spiderman run in the nineties just prior to Harry's "death" and the return of Norman.

I personally never liked Venom. I always thought he was exactly like the cheesy older comic villains that were just a dressed-in-black or opposite versions of the hero. I lump Venom in with Black Atom and Reverse-Flash.

Venom couldn't carry Norman Osborn Gobby's jockstrap even if his life depended on it.

Venom got jerked back and forth Hero anti hero ? Letal Protector, "I wanna eat your brain"

There was only one Green Goblin and what struck me as strange about him is he went against the usual Animal bad guy motif , Having his son go nuts was okay . But I'll always like the old Hobgoblin right when he showed up. Mysterious, FOUND a guys stuff. Looked cool and made sense. But Thats Nostalgia speaking. I thought it was strange on teh Animated series that Hobgoblin was first and Green Goblin was a later accident.

Gobby, Venom sucks and embodies most of what sucked in 90's comics.

Anyone else feel like they really pulled their punches when it came to Harry becoming the Goblin in the movies? Not only in design and execution, but they built up the conflict over two previous movies, only to shift the focus over to Sandman and Venom instead of the more compelling and conflicted relationship between Peter and Harry. Not to mention the ridiculous amnesia thing.

I do like the fact that JM Dematties never resorted to the amnesia cop-out in his run with Harry. Plus I loved Sal Buscema's Green Goblin depiction.

Norman's subtext is about Peter's father issues, which is fine when he's a teenager, whereas I think Harry's conflict is definitely grounded in Peter's adult life and issues of friendship and betrayal.

Which is why I think the "father figure" villains of Spiderman's early career, such as Doc Ock (made even more obvious when he tried to marry Aunt May), The Lizard and The Green Goblin became less potent once Peter grew up. In some ways, it was a good thing that Norman disappeared in "death" for those two decades. With Harry gone, the dynamic did seem to take on a new angle. I particularly liked the Jenkins and Millar runs on Spectacular and Marvel Knights, with Norman as the Big Bad.

I actually like Marc Gagnon's Venom as one of Norman's goons. Kind of like how Crossbones will never be the Red Skull, but is definitely a step up from the usual faceless henchmen.
