Same thing out here in Alberta. When I finally did have one I was less than impressed. This crummy little goo-pie brings master criminals to their knees, and sates the appetite of such hunger meisters as Sylvester the Cat and Wile E. Coyote?? Thats when I figured out comic and cartoon characters are little more than shill's, whoring out products indescriminately without moral integrity to guide them. From that day on I swore never again to be swerved, TEMPTED, by the likes of a talking cat, or man who dresses like a flying rodent!!"Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

These bring back memories. Funny thing while I'll see some and instantly remember them
while others I don't recall at all. Oddly enough, I remember seeing the Green Arrow one (listed as a "one hit hero") quite a bit.Comment

Really? Would it be a regional thing, because I never had any problems getting my twinkies, cupcakes and King Don's fix in grocery stores as a kid in the GTA. I was even overjoyed to see them in the snack machines when I attended Queen's in Kingston.
I spent most summers in California, so I had fruit pies, but they were never my thing. I don't think fruit pies ever came with any trading cards either.Chocolate, apple and cherry are my faves.
Love the old comic ads though!Last edited by haggis; Feb 8, '10, 11:40 PM.No exclusives and no chase figures, please - I'm Canadian!Comment

I loved those Hostess comic ads.
And while we're waxing nostalgic about Hostess, I ate a literal TON of these as a kid and into my early 20's:
I stopped eating them for good once nutrition labels came out in the early 90's. They are insanely bad for you!Comment

I did like the occasional Hostess treat back in my childhood days, esp. when they came out with the strawberry-filled Twinkies. I was more partial to Zingers, the red, coconut-covered rip-off of Twinkies made by Dolly Madison, I believe. My dad used to bring those home to my sister and me from the vending machine at his work.

I remember those two. Robin had a Mummy Bat gun? And yeah teh one with Nitro was sad.
I've always wanted a trade paperback with ALL the ads in them. Guess this site you linked up will have to do !Thanks!
Never cared much for the actual pies themselves (we live under the empire of Tastykakes- and Chocolate Juniors are literally the Food of the Gods).
But I love the comic strips...I think the one that comes to mind first is Batman & Robin vs. the Mummy by Dick Giordano. And Marvel had the Captain Marvel vs. Nitro one, which when I see it now makes me think how sad that Mar-Vell actually died for Hostess Fruit Pies- I'm sure that Jim Starlin just covered up that part of the story to avoid Marvel losing business with Hostess.
I always considered the one-pagers to be an actual part of the comic book itself, like a bonus extra.
Does anyone know how much these ads really affected Hostess' sales? I mean, they had to be successful, they ran for years and in pretty much every publisher, I know there were Archie & Josie ones as well as the superheroes, and the DC ones ran in the Gold key books- plus I seem to recall Roadrunner & Bugs Bunny ones, or is that just me imagining that Wile E. Coyote was tricked with apple pies?Comment
