Yeah! More Gore!
The old school nerd in my longs for the multi-company crossover where the Earth 1 Superman returns and sends every psycho who ever maimed, bludgeoned, decaptiated or mutilated another character to the Phantom Zone.
That includes the writers who can't seem to control themselves. And the editors who let them.

>That was the basic plot of Kingdom Come
Even THAT'S been done before?!?!? Wow.
Y'know, my problem with stuff like this isn't the horrificness; it's that we all know it's temporary. No matter how gruesome your death, you'll be back. (In superhero comics, even SEEING the body isn't enough.) So all consequence, meaning, effect, is sucked out leaving only the titilation. Which is a marketing gimmick. And I hate marketing gimmicks.
It's wanting to say you do "grownup" stuff without the consequences of said stuff.

I don't think I'd mind it as much if it was more tastefully done. I always think back to that great Roger Stern/John Byrne Captain America story where he beheads Baron Blood. All off panel and in shadow, and it was so very powerful. Much more so than if they had shown his shield shattering vertabrae, and bloody meat splattering everywhere. And it was far more tasteful, for sure!
The Joker beat Jason Todd (nearly) to death off panel. And when we first saw Jason's bruised and battered face, it was a shocker. Now a days blood, gore, teeth, hair eyelashes, gray matter, etc. would be flying everywhere in double-page spread.
As much as I like Geoff Johns work, I blame the recent crop on the excessive gore of Infinite Crisis.

Well.... I think sometimes it better serves the story to show the gruesome stuff. Some things are SUPPOSED to be repulsive, especially if you're trying for an older audience. But stuff like this is.... almost cartoony, with intestines flopping around like sausage and unidentifiable chunks everywhere. It's how a 14 year old would envision a disembowelling. And it kinda smacks of the "plausible deniability" Marvel and DC have used for questionable material for decades.
