Joe Johnston Gives Captain America Update

Whats up with guys working on this film? They seem a bit nonchalant with the casting? Its supposed to be released in July of next year.
Aren't they leaving it a bit late?

Film Journal got an update from director Joe Johnston about his next project, Marvel Studios' The First Avenger: Captain America:

"We're in prep," Johnston says. "Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we're set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It's the part of the process that I love the most," he enthuses. "We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could do this?' It's that phase of the production where money doesn't matter: ‘Let's put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.'" The film, he says at this early stage, will begin "in 1942, 1943" during World War II. "The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we're sort of avoiding. We're going back to the ’40s, and then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now."

The First Avenger: Captain America has set a July 22, 2011 release date for the film. >>

Hopefully Marvel will continue to do things right and try not to rush things. With an Avengers movie at stake, I would imagine that one or two of the individual movies bombing could scuttle those plans and fast track Iron Man 3 instead.

Looking forward to a Cap movie set in WW2.

How about Gary Oldman as the Red Skull?

In today's very liberal world, it will be interesting to see whether the movie industry can capture the heart of Captain America without politicizing it. Right now I have my doubts.

Wasn't the Idea Origionally Behind Captain America , or atleast around WW2..., Political to Begin with as a Poster Child for America threw Comics, ads and a Smer Campaign to Bash Nazi's and German's in General ? ... I don't understand your Post ..., as far as capturing the Heart of the character without it very Well being Political.

I'd like to see some serious Action..., with a good story,.. somewhat Band of Brother's Stlye, maybe with a hint more color,.. and then ofcourse the Comicbook Angle,.. and I'd be Happy.

After sitting through Joe Johnson's overt liberal political tirades in The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park, Jumanji, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids, I can see why you would be concerned.

What is your doubts on the political angle? At this point in cinema, I don't think there is a clearer consensual reality than stopping Nazis was a good thing.

              Agreed.

A movie set in WWII...even moderate liberals like myself can really get patriotic...I mean...we are fighting the Nazis here...lol.

              GO USA!!!

Tsk, tsk. Now you have gone and made this threat political. I hate when people make it political. But I have to throw my 2 cents in because I've heard this tune sung before. So you're saying just enough in that post to insinuate that liberals are bad, baaaad people and being liberal is un-American and un-patriotic. Bad liberals are to blame for the woes of not just the USA but of the world. At the same time you've just I.D. yourself, probably, as a conservative or even*gasp* that endangered species known in North America as a Republican! You're saying that if only everyone were more conservative things would be better, like maybe, the economy.

You might prefer to try a post like that on another board where they thrill on bashing each other over politics. Do you like Star Trek? Try the Trek BBS boards. They are rabidly liberal over there and I'm sure you could get a real bar-brawl started without hardly any effort.

The interesting thing about WWII is the opinion of the nation, the USA, at that period in history, was to stay out of world affairs and mind our own business. You could say that was a pretty conservative stance at that time-to be anti-war. The USA, on the whole, was very much against getting involved even when England was being bombed into the stone age. Also there was a tremendous wave of anti-semitism. Even then American Hero Charles Lindburg was overtly anti-semetic, ( see The Glory and The Dream by William Manchester). The famous comic book cover of that era, with Captain America slugging Adolf the Ratzi with a right cross caused quite an uproar with the public, ( Superheroes Unmasked Documentary - The History Channel). Comic book writers and artists were often threatened with violence. Jack Kirby once attmepted to beat the tar out of Ratzi-lovers in the lobby of Marvel, (Timely), Comics once, ( Kirby - King of Comics). People who recognized the Ratzi's for what they were and called for action could have been considered quite liberal at that time-to call for action and get involved in a war.

So before you go and star poking donkeys and elephants with sticks you should ask yourself is it worth just posting to pizz-off people of the opposite political party because you don't like them.

Politics or not, I just want them to do Cap right this time around; action and romance in a WWII setting. Skipping the 60's and 70's stuff and heading more towards the Ultimates world would be nice touch. Make the movie realistic with a strong comic flare. Oh yeah, and beat up some Nazi's!

Just to try and steer this back to Captain America... how do people want to see him portrayed? At this point in Marvel Comics, they have set up a situation where they get to appease both ends of the spectrum.

On the one hand, the classic 616 Marvel Universe Captain America, Steve Rogers who is newly returned to life.

On the other you have the Ultimate Universe Captain America introduced a few years ago.

Forget the costume, which would you rather see brought to life on the big screen? Both their politics are pretty overt, but let's avoid that and talk about their CHARACTER and how the comic book portrayals might be translated to the big screen.

I like the Ultimates Version of Cap....I finally got excited again about the character as he seemed lame and lost in the late 80's and 90's.

The Ultimate WW2 Cap from the Ultimates is off the hook......

I really think for Captain America the Movie..., He will look somewhat like this..., and then More-So the Ultimate version for the Avenger's Flick.. No Way Wings on His Head and Pirate Boots would Transition Well on the Big Screen.

I think early leaked designs by Hitch for the movie showed the helmet with wings painted on it. I can't remember where I ran across those images.
