UGH! Seriously, here's what I don't get...w/ Archies or superheroes or any comic book character...people say they have to grow and change and all that...why? They're fictitious characters! They can stay the same age forever!! I will never look at Archie as anything other than a fun loving teenager w/ a jalopy car, and a cool singing group.

'Cos the readers grow and change. People don't always realize that part of why they lose interest in things isn't because o those things, but because THEY'VE changed.

And there's some marketing involved. Archie is a great example since it's changed SO MANY times. And there've been so many "alternate reality" versions. Reboots, overarcing stories (that often just disappeared.)

Maybe it's a good thing the comic nerds never glommed onto Archie. I can just immagine the "who'd win; the Boy from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. or Pureheart the Powersful? Well, in issue 234...."

It's clear that Archie still follows the old-school model of comics aimed at children... continuity doesn't matter because the readership changes over every few years as the next generation of kids/tweens grow up and move onto other things.

Reading those old Fleisher "encyclopedias" of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman where he exhaustively catalogues all the continuity glitches, it's clear that was the way things operated at DC comics up until the Marvel talent pool (Roy Thomas in particular, Wolfman etc) started moving in there... maybe even up towards the end of Julius Schwartz's era on Superman and the launch of Crisis, after which they were constantly stumbling over themselves and doing backflips to try and explain every little thing.

They do follow the old format; but since the late 80's there's been a tendency to add stuff to the continuity. Stuff that sorta just disappears a few years later. Kinda like the superhero books used to do. Hence the long list of characters who've gone missing over the years. (And my suspicion there's a surprisingly full landfill just outside of Riverdale....)
