    Let's talk Independent Comics...

Wasn't so much a fan of the Indy black and whites as much as I was a fan of companies like PC, First, Comico, and Dark Horse.

    PC Comics that I Liked:
    Starslayer (By Mike Grell)
    Groo (Aragones)
    Captain Victory (Jack Kirby)

    First Comics:
Jon Sable Freelance (By Mike Grell)
    Warp (Frank Brunner)
    Grim Jack
    Alter Ego (By Roy Thomas)

    Comico:
    Elementals
    Grendel
    Justice Machine

There are so many great books that came out of the Indy Comic companies. But there were also nightmares like Ms. Mystic from Continuity (Neal Adams Studios). I think there was at least a year between issues 1 and 2 or 2 and three....can't remember. Anyway....name some of your favorite Indy books.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
    The beauty that surrounds them
    Isn't it a pity".

    - "Isn't It A Pity"

Man, I used to like all of those books you listed. Groo is one of my favourite books ever....needs to be made into a cartoon or film (Jim Belushi as Groo?).

Continuity did have some neat stuff, but all their books always shipped late..if at all....Even Zero Patrol, which was mainly translated and reprinted from another source.

Destroyer Duck, Elric, Eternity Smith...man there were so many different books to choose from.

Since I work for 'em, I guess I better mention AC's books Fem Force, and Sentinels of Justice. The current books have kind of lost their way a bit due to economic factors and the @#$% hand of Diamond, but the 80's stories were great!
Even though they are mainly re-prints (and B&W) I always look forward to Men of Mystery and the now out of print Best of the West. Golden Age greatness!!

      Hmmmm....

I was never a mainstream kinda guy. So for me, some of the bestest comics ever are:

      -Grimjack
      -Albedo
      -Those Annoying Post Bros
      -Usagi Yojimbo
      -Atomic city Tales
      -Mr Monster

....and some that were CONSIDERED independents here:

      -Golgo 13
      -Judge Dredd
      -Area 88

      Don C.

Was more of a DC and to a lesser degree, Marvel guy but did dabble in some non-traditional books back in the olden days.
I did buy Boris the Bear, Omaha the cat dancer, Alien Nation and Planet of the Apes comics. If you consider Valiant an independent publisher I also liked Doctor Mirage. Bought Gladstone and Russ Cochran's EC reprints along with a slew of Disney books by Gladstone.
              I'm sure there's some I am forgetting.

YES! Strangers in Paradise is still one of my all time favourites. A series that defies any kind of box anyone might try to place around it. With that said, I'm glad it ended while it was still so compelling. Waiting for Echo to pile up some trades before I dive in. Moore's stuff is best in big chunks. Looking forward to checking out his mainstream stuff like Runaways and Mary Jane loves Spiderman.

His Gen 13 is worth checking out as well. The first time I actually cared about that Fairchild character that is normally just TnA. He even made a valiant attempt on Lady Supreme despite the bizarro art that fought the story and dialogue every step of the way.

It's great to see so many fans of The Elementals. I thought it really was a hugely underrated series. Too bad it ended so badly. For those that are interested, go check out Bill Willingham's Pantheon. That is where he got to finish the Elementals storyline with a new set of characters. You can basically graft the Oblivion War as the loose backstory to the Pantheon characters.

Anyone reading Fables? I'm still very much enjoying it despite a bit of a bump recently with the Fables Crossover. Jack of Fables is fun, but isn't as good, but I'm liking the soft-reboot the title recently received by handing the reigns over to Jack Frost.

KIngs in Disguise. One of the most overlooked indie books of the 80's.

It would be the severest of understatements to say that times were tough in 1932. Still, it was a place where two brothers, Albert and Freddy, could escape to the movies and buy dreams for the price of a dime. Sadly, their father’s dream had died when unemployment led to alcoholism. And when, to his shame, he admitted he could no longer support his family, he left Albert to care for his little brother, and went to find work in another town.

For a while, the boys got along all right, but the bad times were relentless. Albert went without food so his brother could eat, and eventually he tried to mug someone. Albert failed and was caught, and Freddy fled the house before he could be thrown into an orphanage. Out on his own, he came into the company of the hoboes: poor bands of people who hitched rides from town to town on passing railway cars. They were thought of as bums, and some deserved the title. But others were more like kings in disguise…
Check out this wonderful cover by the late Harvey Kurtzman.

Couple of others that I remember are a black and white called "The Adventures of Luther Arkwright" by Bryan Talbot and the other was possibly Fabian Nicieza's best work, IMHO, "Troublemakers" for Valiant Comics. And who could forget one of the most popular indy's "Miracaleman" by Eclipse Comics. It's gonna be interesting to see how bad Marvel can really F-up Marvelman/Miracleman.

Someone mentioned AC Comics...Isn't that where Jerry Ordway got his start. Also remember people like George Perez doing a couple of books early on in AC's start. Lot of really good things came out of indy books in the 80's.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
