No, I can't see trading $200 worth of comics for this one variant. Granted, maybe you can't sell all your overstock for cover price, but I would think you would have to flip that Deadpool IMMEDIATELY to recoup anything on the deal. I'd sooner sell those extra BNs at a buck apiece and get something out of them instead of trying to cash in on this.
Variant covers have a pretty slim shelf life these days thanks to Ebay...just as do variant action figures. You can get a decent price if you're either pre-selling it or happen to get on there in the first few hours of release. After that, it drops off. A month after release it will be at least only 1/2 original value, after 2-3 months? I know of at least one shop that sells variants for only a couple bucks after they've sat around awhile.
There will be 50 of these Deadpools on Ebay the day it's released...and 1/2 of those will be from the same couple of dealers. How does that happen..they can't have each trashed 4 or 500 copies of these books can they? I do NOT believe there is a hard & fast rules from Diamond shipping concerning the 1:10, 1:25 etc. There's a shop I know of that always seems to have 2 or 3 of each variant every time. Is he really ordereing 30-100 copies of every issue? I can't believe he has that big a client base...whenever I'm in there I see maybe one other customer. My local guy has got a variant or two shipped him when he only ordered a few copies (particularly so with the Dynamite stuff...granted there are 8-14 covers for each issue from them, easy to see how that could get screwed up). Also, he's been getting a few Marvel variants in months after the books released..he just got sent a couple Secret Invasions with his regular shipment. And if you go to a convention this summer, I'll bet you find a signed stack of those for sale at J. Scott Campbell's table for sale.
The other factor in this is that really, anyone who went crazy ordering the BN books for the rings is of the speculator mind...This Deadpool deal is for those type of retailers. They will dump the books anyway, hoping to recoup expense by selling sets of the rings....which may work until there is a glut of ring sets (or DC may release them themselves- I know they made an upscale set for $40.00 or so, they may make a $10.00 set available if they have enough stock, or cut a deal with retailers to buy them through Diamond). A look on Ebay shows they're getting about $15-20 a set...but it doesn't look like there is a shortage of ring sets. Is there a particular color ring that is harder to get, anyone know?Comment

Basically Marvel has stated that if you turn in 50 copies of Blackest Night anything ...., you get this variant Cover for Free .
You Know ..., they coulda came up with a better comicbook that mighta Been more so in there favor for this Rediculous Movement... 50 Comics..., lets low Ball these..., and say you payed 2.99 a book Flatt, no tax, shipping nore any book cost you 3.99 ..., That would Be 149.50 for this Gang Bang Pimp Deadpool with 2 Ho's Cover ...

What I find kind of ridiculous is that they are offering it for Blackest Night books, and not Planet of the Hulks (or whatever it's called this week), or Secret Invasion or Civil War or Siege branded Marvel event comics.Comment

^^^Well,.. It's kinda obvious..., to me... it's a Shot at DC Comics.
... It's not a Bad idea,.. as far as a Spightful Tactic goes,.. in the Name of saying "We are Better" or whatever,... But I think they failed as far as , what they have to offer ... Give away Complete Collected Trades ..., or a pretty Lengthy story ..., I bet then, they would get some bites ...... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. Hmmmm....
It's definitely a publicity stunt; and I'm not a fan of marketing.... especially when it DOESN'T WORK! So.... I gotta hand in $149.50 worth of the competitor's books. Which means I first have to BUY $149.50 OF THE COMPETITOR'S BOOKS!!!!!
Way t'boost DC's sales, Marvel. No wonder you geniusses are doing so well....

That way Marvel would be saying... if DC Product like Blackest Night isn't to your satisfaction, try out a Marvel storyline.
Instead they are trying to counter the Blackest Night ring gimick... with a variant cover gimick. Neither is really focusing on the product itself, despite what Marvel would have you believe in this case.
It will be interesting to see how many bit and whether it will pay off for retailers flipping the book to recoup or gain additional profits.Comment

Basically, the variant is for books that have already been shipped and are theoretically sitting on the shelves for a couple of months now as "dead stock", particularly once the trades come out.
The retailers are supposedly stuck with the Blackest Night books they over ordered on because of the ring promotion.
Most retailers these days stick those piles of books into deep discount anyways because trades have killed the recent back issue market. Instead of taking the loss on those books, Marvel is offering them a "hot" Deadpool variant that they can flip for $$$ to try and recoup whatever losses they might have experienced for those 50 DC books.
I imagine many retailers will bite and be thankful for the opportunity.
From a PR POV, it gets people talking, but many seem to think it's a low blow since Marvel is as guilty as Events and Gimmicks as DC is. Kind of the pot calling the kettle black.
Like when Quesada started referring to DC Comics as AOL Comics a decade ago. At that time of course, you could just as easily refer to Marvel as Toy Biz Comics.Comment

>variant is for books that have already been shipped and are theoretically sitting on the shelves
Theoretically.... but I could see this getting out of hand the OTHER way if it takes off, with retailers ordering more books with the intent of snagging the variant covers.
>retailers are supposedly stuck with the Blackest Night books they over ordered on because of the ring promotion
Yeah, like that! Unfortunately for them, it's another gimmick; and gimmicks only hold the attention of the public for so long.... so I can't see it having any lasting effect. 'Cept in nostalgic comic rants of the future: "Hey, remember when Deadpool dressed up like Ali G ten years ago? Wow, comics were SOOOO stupid. Hand me this month's 'Super-blood-ultimate-death-crisis-of-darkest-new-world-secret-final-universe' reboot. Y'know; the one where everybody dies twice and comes back with new powers. Again."
