They kind of explained how Dr Fate was able to be killed by Icicle. It's not the best explanation, but for this version of Fate I was ok with it. He was focusing his power and attention on saving John Jones at the moment. Remember, he kind of pushed John out of the way, and said something about it not being John's time. That was what gave Icicle the chance to take him out. Yeah, Dr. Fate probably should have been able to protect himself and John, but I guess this version was a little out of practice. Like I said, not the best explanation, but it was ok in the context of this show. That doesn't mean I wasn't upset to see him die. I was hoping for more appearances, as he was one of my favorite things about the episode.

Careful you might end up with the live action verison of the JLA detroit years, or even worse the JLA pilot with David ogden Stiers

Yeah, and I'm wondering if this wasn't just a convient way to get the Doctor Fate helmet & identity out of the crazy old guy's hands and off into a younger more Smallville-esq character joining Clark's team?
