already rumors flying that Sony wants Zac Effron (sp) from High School Musical for the movie.
I was afraid of that. Efron is way too "pretty" to be Peter Parker IMHO. Not saying he couldn't pull it off, but just from the physical standpoint, he's too handsome. And he'll be too old by the time they start rolling to really pull of this teen thing won't he?
Huh? Spidey has plenty of villains to choose from. If that's the reason they canned it, it's a stupid one.
I dunno....this is what I read....
The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog confirmed late today that Spider-Man 4, a movie that had recently hit the brakes due to creative differences primarily over what villain the movie should use, has been outright canceled.
Columbia, Sony, and Marvel Studios will instead reboot the Spider-Man movie franchise, launching a new series of films with Peter Parker in high school, more similar to the take on the character seen in Marvel Comics' Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. With the relaunch, director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, who had been involved with the first three big screen successes, all part ways with the franchise.
Raimi presented far from sour grapes, instead wishing Marvel luck saying, "the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."
Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!
I liked the first Mcguire.Raimi best. I have no complaint if there isn't a 4th (they really shot the wad in 3 and used up the last of the top notch villians)
BUT the films were good enough that a reboot this fast is a mistake. If forces comparision which means the next one has to be really great (lead wise almost anyone could be better than mcguire but the story and script for the first 2 are really great and were enhanced by well done but not overdone effects)
marvel should focus on a franchise that they haven't used recently in a film (ie get Captain America or Avengers out of preprod) or fixing the ones done wrong - but not punisher (FF, Daredevil, ghostrider)
Too soon. People (fans) have a relationship with Mcquire as Parker. And they didn't cover enough storyline to have to go ALL THE WAY BACK THROUGH another freakin' love story with MJ AGAIN! Massive mistake. The film will underperform big time.
I don't know about this whole teen high school idea either
The Teen Idea is a good one because that's how Spidey started as a confused geeky teen who all of a sudden gets super powers and has to deal with it.
Teens who are the real movie target audience can buy into a character that looks and acts like them.
Plus the studio would rather have a young actor cause if the movie is a hit he ages slowly for the sequels. Look at Harry Potter and how they Milked that.

Teens now have short memories and move on pretty fast to the next thing.....the way the Spiderman movies were going now it would have been 2 or 3 villans to a movie. Sorry but that's not going to work with a character like Spiderman who's stories are based on his character. One villan per movie would work not 3 or more
To me they will have to retool the storyline too. Fresh faces on a familiar storyline will not work alone. If they do it according to the comics, then Gwen Stacy would become his squeeze and then the Goblin would kill her off. Now if they actually covered that storyline, I would go for it.

Betty Brant actually was his first crush and yes Gwen is the way to go especially if you're going to work in her death....which is what Spidey truly is a character that deals with real life tragedies in his life and overcomes them.....
Here's the thing and I think it gets past some fans of the movies. Peter Parker is suppose to be nerdy in many aspects. Tobey Macguire fits that bill very well. But he's also a very good actor that really delivered the essence of Parker. Some fans might have confused his "nerdness' as a short selling of the character when, in fact, it was staying true to the comic. My fear now is that Sony will abandon what was true to the characterization and go after some "Twilight" knockoff to get the 14 year old girls to see this film. If they abandon quality for style, they will kill the franchise off quickly. Credibility must still be there, both in the cast and the director. It still bothers me though (and it should bother any fan of the series) that this overhaul did not come about from an original creative decision, but as a result of creative differences. It happened because of a fight so, in affect, the director and cast were fired by the controlling interests for THAT reason (not because someone caught a "vision"). We need to seperate the 'damage control' bravado from what is really happening. So in my eyes this is what we really have - The controlling interests, with bruised egos in hand, are out there trying to find a whole new director and cast and HOPE lightening strikes twice. OF COURSE their going to say they know what their doing. But the truth is their flying by the seat of their pants and we have no idea if they can save this franchise or not. People talk about familiarity with Parker. What about J Jonah Jameson? That guy did a GREAT job and now he's out. Their changing every aspect of what made the film work. Forget which storyline you liked the best. The chemistry that held it altogether is gone and no one can say it's for the best. We'll just have to wait and see what they can salvage.
