Re: Why does "BOOM" Disney have too much variants?

    Hey

I stopped buying Walt Disney Comics and Stories, Donald Duck and Friends and Uncle Scrooge because they have different cover types A, B and C while all of the stories inside each cover type are the same..

BOOM have taken up licensing for those Disney comics and sprouting out many cover types and variants for each comic...

What happened to the good old fashioned single comic with out the stupid useless variants that take up too much box or shelf space. Probably gone now...

Or BOOM got too greedy??? It does not make sense to me....

    Bring back Gemstone!!!....

I hate to tell you this, but Boom IS Disney. All you can do is hope Boom goes boom and Gemstone is once again around to pick up the pieces.

Actually...now that Marvel is part of the family too, Boom may just get folded into them??

After the monopoly created by Geppi (Diamond Dist.).... I hope Gemstone DOESN'T come back.

Diamond's mistreatment of the very retailers that helped it stay in business when companies like Capital went the way of the DODO while kissing up to mass book retailers like Borders and Barnes & Noble... it's fitting that Geppi's pet project "Gemstone" sunk like a rock.

^^true that! I do some with work a couple of different indie publishers and Diamond is really wearing thin on them, telling them what they can print, what price to put on a book...really nasty way to do business!!

When did Disney buy out Boom?

As far as I can recall, Boom licenses the Disney properties and Ross Richie and co have a large roster of titles that are not associated with Disney at all, included a few non-Disney licenses.

so when Boom's agreement is up, look for it to be handled by Marvel's staff.

^ You got it! I can see Marvel using the Disney brand to launch a whole new line of kids comics.

Has DC made much of a dent with their WB/Hanna Barbera properties in comics?

I can't figure out why we don't see Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo et al at the Drug Store and Grocery Marts alongside Archie anymore. Heck Tiny Titans digests would be a wonderful addition to TV Guide, Disney Magazine, and Betty and Veronica digests at the checkout line.

If Boom goes bust, I hope someone is smart enough to give Mark Waid an editorial job at DC. It's where he belongs.

D'oh...Crap!! Your right...I mixed it up with Kingdom Comics...which is Disney. Come to think of it...I wonder how Boom got the Disney stuff with Kingdom looming.

Same end to the story though, with Marvel now in the family, I cant see Boom/Kingdom/whomever keeping the Disney characters for longer!

At the very least Doug Wildey's Comico stuff should be collected and kept in print.

Why are so many people rooting for BOOM! to fail?

It's not like they are really threatening DC or Marvel's dominance and they are providing a great deal more diverse product that doesn't really compete with any DC or Marvel stuff at all.

Mark Waid is still writing for the Majors with recent runs on Spiderman, and he's stated he really isn't interested in being in any kind of editorial capacity at DC anymore (been there, done that... and he was a great editor). In fact I would argue that moving to Boom has really given him a shot in the arm creatively by freeing him to write outside of the Superhero bubble.

Boom's got some great books. The Muppet book is one that all ages can enjoy without feeling pandered to. My nephew LOVES the CARS book. Keith Giffen is once more given the chance to write a superhero sitcom on Hero Squared with JM Dematties, something that DC or Marvel isn't interested in pursuing at this time. Giffen's also shone much more lately on his non-superhero books like the graphic novella "10", Dominion and Jeremiah Harm. Fall of Cthulhu is a better take on Lovecraft's concepts than most of the books from other companies that have preceded it. Zombie Tales was actualloy ahead of the Zombie trend.

Boom!'s continued success would be hugely beneficial to an otherwise continually inbred community, and I never understand it when folks actively root AGAINST indie comics. Dark Horse, Fantagraphics, Image, IDW and the rest all service different niches than the Big Two. My family has no interest at all in Blackest Night or Seige, but hand my Dad a Lone Wolf and Cub, and he will read a comic, and my spouse has started discovering a great many things like Mouse Guard, The Arrival and Bone when we go into comic stores that do stock more diverse titles outside of our insulated Fan-Men community.
