I guess if you held a gun to my head I'd say Harvey Kurtzman because I love his drawing style and he's a true master of the comic form. He was a very hands-on editor and did a lot of the layouts in the old days. Most importantly he created Mad.
I think Don Martin was the funniest Mad artist ever.
I also love Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Sergio Aragones, Al Jaffee, Mort Drucker, Basil Wolverton...Comment

On the other side I never really appreciated Dave Berg. It played like putting a very scripted and dry sit-com in the middle of an improve comedy routine. The only thing that really tied his work into the rest of the book was Aragones' margin drawings.
His actual drawing style was very skilled, but it lacked a lot of the energy most of the other artists brought. I don't hate him, but I never loved him.Last edited by Brazoo; Dec 31, '09, 6:38 PM.Comment

Jack Davis or Don MartinYou must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

Any love for Will Elder?
I have to admit that I lean towards the Harvey Kurtzman years when it comes to Mad. In the seventies, as much as I loved Don Martin, Al Jaffee, Spy Vs Spy et al, I got much more enjoyment from Cracked thanks to John Severin's dynamic movie/tv caricatures and Bill Ward's impossibly built Nanny Dickering.

It's actually impossible to choose one artist from that scene - they're all amazing!Comment

...oddly enough; I concur. (Except for the last part; I had a friend who was actually built like that.) I'm also surprised at how many of the Mad guys did serious stuff too.

I was never a real fan of Cracked or Crazy or Sick....those are the mags you tended to buy if you couldn't find a copy of Mad IMOThink OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

I liked Crazy for Teen Hulk and the times that they would print funny versions of regular Marvel Comics in What's Up Tiger Lily style. Obnoxio Clown crossing over with The X-men was just bizarre.Comment
