Darwyn Cooke Appreciation Thread

Anyone else feel like this guy just "gets it" on so many levels?

I feel like his stuff is so familiar, yet I know that in the grand scheme of things, he hasn't been around THAT long.

I have only really become aware of his stuff in the last few years, but it just seems so familiar that I instantly became a fan of his work.

Flynne turned me onto Cooke's run on The Spirit and after reading that, I have made a point out of searching out everything he has done that I can lay my hands on.

I just feel his style bridges lots of gaps. What say you?

To be fair, he hasn't been around comics for that long, but he is a veteran of Animation.

So jumping from Batman The Animated series to the Ego Graphic Novel wasn't necessarily that far a leap.


Supposedly, his first comic work was back in the eighties in New Talent Showcase!

I was planning on picking up both of those up tomorrow (day off). I've thumbed through them.... just haven't pulled the trigger.

As a "Merry Christmas to Me" I have ordered the Absolute: New Frontier (2nd Print) and some of the figures DC produced for the event.

Figured it was a cinch that there were other fans, but glad to read of your love for DC's stuff, samurainoir.

The whole Justice League: New Frontier put me on a mad scramble for stuff by Cooke and books that Cooke drew upon. For instance, because of Cooke, I've snatched up all things Challengers of the Unknown that I can think of.

I just subscribed to Jonah Hex and imagine my surprise when the first issue I received was drawn by Darwyn Cooke. I couldn't have scripted it better for my own surprise.

DC would be better off if they gave him the keys to the front door and dumped Didio. He really gets the DCU.

I think his age helps he is a child of the 50's not the 80's so he has a long history of the characters less tainted by the late 80's early 90's push towards "edgy" comics. his style is more "simplistic" (I think both from his animation backround and his experiences with sivler age artists) letting the plot drive the book more than overly detailed drawings

Love Cooke's stuff. He has a style similar to Timm's, but he tends to lean more to the Canniff and Eisner side where Timm leans more toward Kirby.

I'd have no problem if they gave Cooke the keys to any DC character, or the universe itself. New Frontier is the roadmap a new DCU should follow, just update the time setting.

New Frontier is a classic! I wish they had done more with this approach...

I loved Cooke's take on The Spirit. The title definitely floundered upon his departure.

Darwyn Cooke is one of the greats. I met him at San Diego Comicon a few years ago. I didn't really know much about him, or realize how opinionated he is(not a bad thing, mind you). He'd be a fantastic replacement for Dan Didio.

Cooke's a toy collector, they used to interview him on the Space channel a lot at his studio, where you could see a wall of classic Joes and Captain Action.

Ran into him once in Toronto, I intially thought my kid should get his autograph but I didn't want to bug him, he was shopping.

Yep.
Bought the movie, read the comics just this Spring. LOVE his stuff. My wife digs the style too. He just has a great classic look to his stuff. If his characters could have a touch more detail in the musculature, it would be perfect IMO but I love it as is.

I'm really wanting to track down his Hunter graphic novel and read it. I've met him briefly at HeroesCon before. A very nice, very genuine guy.

I have thumbed through this and it looks amazing. Went back to get it the other day and the CBS had sold out.

From what I have read, there is going to be a series of this books, all done by Cooke, based on adaptations from the novels.
