    Vulture: Ditko or Grantray/Lawrence?

Most of you know that the sum total of my exposure to Spider-Man is the 60s Grantray/Lawrence series. But Today on a whim, I picked up a copy of the Marvel MasterWorks Spider-Man edition. I got to the "issue" w/ The Vulture, and was suprised he didn't look like the cartoon. (though he does resemble a bird w/ the really big nose). So my question is this: Which was do you like better? (I think you know what my answer is!)

"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

Well, one was based on the other, yet adapted. No matter your preference, one can be one thing to you and the other can lead you into a whole new world that will broaden your understanding of the other.

I am very proud of you for picking up the Marvel Masterworks. Read it...enjoy it...let it dovetail with the cartoon and I promise, in the end, you will love the cartoon even more. They are not mutually exclusive. If anything ( if your only exposure is the cartoon ) your horizons will be broadened far more than moving from the comics to the cartoon.

Embrace it, my friend....it won't ruin your memories. It can only deepen your understanding of them.

I am proud of you for seeking out the comic!

The cartoon Vulture was based on a different Vulture than the original comics. Adrian Toomes was the original Vulture. Balckie Drago is the cartoon Vulture. He wore the cybernetic helmet with which he could control birds.

Hmmmm, I haven't finished the Vulture story and I don't remember anyone mentioning the Vulture's real identity in the cartoon. Am I missing something?

Ok, I'll do my best. And thanks for being proud of me!

            Well....
In the comics, Adrian Toomes went to jail and Blackie Drago became the new Vulture. When the cartoon came out, Blackie Drago was the current Vulture so they based the animated version on him. I wondered the same thing myself for years until I read about Blackie Drago somewhere. He wore the helmet in the comics. It's a bit like Mego Iron Man haivng a nose. I wondered why that was for years until I bought a friend some vintage IronMan comics for Xmas one year about oh, 15-20 years ago now and on the cover of one of them was a picture of IM with the nose. Then it made sense!

The cartoons don't even begin to tap into the wealth of knowledge you can experience by reading the actual comics...

I used to find it disturbing that neither Vulture was the same either when I was a wee one. I later learned why, but still preferred the cartoon version. Toomes looks too much like my grumpy old school bus driver when I was in elementary school. Even if he could fly, Spidey coulda' knocked him out with a sneeze in his general direction!
