The Rise of Arsenal and 'The Fall of Green Arrow'

DC plays musical chairs with names and costumes nowadays. It's worse than Marvel used to be in the 70s and 80s. The old Handbook to the Marvel Universe was full of 3 or 4 versions of the lamest characters.
So Roy was Speedy forever, then Arsenal, then briefly he was Arsenal in a Red Arrow-like costume (Jurgens Titans run), then he was Native-American inspired Arsenal, then he was Gun-toting Arsenal, then he was Red Arrow, and now he's the One-Armed Bandit, soon to be Arsenal again.
Oh yeah and he was a Junkie! I read it on a comic cover.

I've said it before...I'll say it again....I miss when comics were for kids too! This looks like keerap on a grand scale. Even the junkie Speedy stories were something a kid could read and learn from...it wasnt done just for shock value. there was a message.
and Saildog...I'm with you on the red boots and beard thing. I miss the golden age GA...even if he was a poor mans Batman at the time."Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

The comic industry is going to continue its downward spiral if they keep doing these shock value issues. They need to go back to just entertaining kids again with storys and art filled with fun, heroic adventures instead of making these dark, gory, artificially "edgy" and "trendy" comics for the jaded segment of their continually dwindling readership base.
I miss the heroic, optimistic and angst free DC universe. They're no different from Marvel now except maybe even more gory and crass.
If they are obsessed with doing this type of content, they really need to split off the DC universe into two segments. An adults only 18 plus line and a regular mainstream DC universe without the gore and self parody levels of emo angst. You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

Sometimes I think they're TRYING to.... since a lot of this stuff is the sort of thing that happens in the Japanese books kids like (Bleach, Naruto, and NO book features more dying and coming back than Dragonball Z) but they flub it 'cos they're not quite understanding the appeal. "So.... kids like it when the hero gets maimed and has all sorts of personal problems, right?" No, kids like seeing the hero OVERCOME those problems, but that requires a story that PROGRESSES; which a perpetual book can't.

>A little over the top if you ask me
Well.... I think yes and no. My BIGGEST problem isn't the gruesomeness though. It's surprisingly.... mute, considering. (Sorta how bullet wounds in superhero books used to not leave blood. Or tear cloth....) Is Speedy a zombie? Or a 'borg? 'Cos in BOTH pics there's not much blood, and he's pretty conscious for a guy missing an arm.
It kinda smacks of the "plausibe deniability" way Marvel and DC usually handle stuff like this: they WANT the titilation and shock value, but they don't want the flack, so you end up with the worst of both worlds.

So, internet scuttlebut has Ollie avenging Roy's loss on whoever it was, becoming a fuguitive, quitting the JLA and leaving Dinah. Nothing like crapping on another DC character. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

Dinah isn't going to be the co-feature in the book anymore either....it's going back to being just "Green Arrow".
This whole storyline is completely unnecessary IMO....obviously sales on GA/BC aren't that great so they must feel they have to shock to bump things up.Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

So they rip the arm off a legacy hero and Teen Titan to do so?You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

In a word...whatever. While there are some current series I enjoy my biggest comics pleasure is has been picking up late 70's to mid 80's books on the cheap.
Even on the high end of of cheap 3 or 4 bucks for early 80's Detective comics beats 3 or four bucks for something current. For reasons like this.Comment
