    Iron Man 74....

....and I mean the ORIGINAL Iron Man 74. (Just in case there's been another Iron Man 74.)

Why bring this up? For those of you who haven't read it, the story features a subplot about an evil bad guy; the Black Llama, who'd been shuffling through Marvel's comics offering the bad guys their heart's desire if they play his game.

....and it's not 'cos this idea sort of got recycled as "Secret Wars" a decade later that I bring it up. Rather; I find it interesting that this story is almost exactly like the multi-book, zillion issue non-events plaguing superhero books nowadays. But without the hype. And this sort of thing happened a lot back in the day, but without the hype.

So.... how did they go off the rails? I think it's 'cos the ever escallating hype for these things has outstripped the story potential of 'em. And that's 'cos the audience is pretty sure that nothing's gonna REALLY happen when all is said and done. At least not for too long.

    This one?

I'm a big Modok fan, but I haven't read that one yet. When I was a kid the only comics I collected monthly were Iron Man and John Byrne's FF. I can't remember which issue I started with for Iron Man, but I remember that he had the gold helmet without a nose. (I know, very un-Mego, but cooler looking in my opinion.)

      YEAH! That's it!

I got it 'cos it had Modok in it, and was surprised that it's the middle of a very modern-esque muti book storyline. I was also surprised how much story they used to cram into the older superhero books. Things sure happened fast way back when.

Yeah - for sure! Each comic felt like a complete episode, when I read newer comics they just seem padded with splash pages now - not much seems to actually happen.

I remember books with the multi-book story lines, but was rarer, like when Phoenix came back. I only remember it getting crazy and annoying with Secret Wars 2 when they kept dumping storylines into duds that I hated like Power Pack. Then there was the Scourge thing and a bunch of other multi-book story lines I didn't care about.

I quit collecting comics monthly just after that ended and Byrne left FF.
