"Our pal, Sal"
Well, As you can see in the above topic line, Sal Buscema has passed away. Two days shy of his 90th birthday. It seems like has has been around forever and he has. The bio below will give you more insight into his career. Me, im just gonna talk about the books and titles I have read where I got to see his incredible artwork. It was the 70's where I was reading the Defenders and it was the classic lineup (Hulk, Dr. Strange, Valkyrie, and Nighthawk.) What is funny is that this was WAYYYY before I got into reading the credits to see who did what on the book, that came later.
It was 1972-74; where they were duking it out with the Wrecking Crew and the Squadron Sinister. There was a GIANT SIZE Defenders and it was/IS still soooo Kool! And then They had the REAL Guardians of the Galaxy and Sal had a hand in creating; STARHAWK (Stakar)!! That alone assured him of being a legend!
A lot of people say that big brother; JOHN was the better artist, but to me its all apples and oranges. I dig both of them and they both are amazing, but somehow Sal, had a special quality that had me enthralled. Those fight scenes with the HULK and HYPERION in the Defenders were just amazing. And how was I to know that 30 years later on that "Avengers Assemble" cartoon (in the doublenaughts 2000-2009) where they were in battle against the "Masters of Evil" And on screen, I would see Sal's pages, his work on the screen and it was the most surreal experience seeing those two battle. It was EPIC! I wonder if he ever saw it? I was taken back to 1974 ad Those memories of reading the Defenders, It evoked memories that i had forgotten and you could NOT Wipe the smile off my face!!!
I never met him, the closest I came was dealing with Spencer Beck the "Art dealer" but he did not represent Sal, he did hook me up with Sal's manager. I wanted a special commission. I wanted the REAL Guardians of the Galaxy (Vance Astro, Martinex, Charlie-27 and Yondu) in a group shot marching together. The manager quoted me $1500 and i agreed (This was back in the early double Naughts; when I used to be rich!!) and I then waited for the final details and I waited and waited...
Nothing, not further contact, and I forgot about it and never followed up on it. Kind of regret it now. seeing as he was the one who did Marvel Two-in-one # 4 and it RAWKED!!!
I know I have the TWO MORROWS Sal Buscema art book somewhere and I have tonnes of his comics so I am grateful.
My condolences to Sal and family and fans and friends.
Godbless you Mr. Buscema. Thank you and good night.
