DC Comics in the seen Wild Again

Following up on their 2 Dollar Tree waves of reprint comics for the "masses" DC is once again making a push to get comics to kids/people outside comics books piggybacking on the Superman movie, this time targeting gas stations and convenience stories around the country. I am seeing reports of people finding these DC standees in gas stations and convenience stores in various places, ranging from Sheetz to Cumberland Farms. There's a different mix of books in each pic I've seen, and they are a little pricier ($.99 vs. $1.25) than the Dollar Tree books, but Dollar Tree has their own pricing policy and $2,99 is still cheaper than a new comic, plus it has to be worthwhile for a store to commit space to a standee-comics not paying fo the retail space they took up was one of the major factors why many newsstand outlets decided to stop carrying comics and use the space differently back in the 80s/90s.

I haven't seen these in person (may look at Speedway later this week if I am out and about), but they look to be produced by the same company doing the reprints for DC in the Dollar Tree waves. These waves look to have different books thought and (shockingly) a lot more Superman themed selections.

I, for one, really hope these do well in terms of getting comics in the hands of readers, particularly kids, who might not otherwise have access to single issue comics.

I love that they are doing this. I hope it gets some new customers (especially young ones) interested in super hero comics.

I had forgotten we had a Sheetz open up over by our fairgrounds last fall; I had never been to it, but I took a ride over to check it out this afternoon (a dodgy proposition as the county fair opens tomorrow and there were lots of animal trailers clogging the road as people were loading in).

I found the standee, kind of by itself in a corner near where people wait to pick up their hot food orders (probably strategic as it might catch the eye of impatient kids waiting with their parents for their food). I flipped through the selections, and there's a lot more variety than there was in the Dollar Tree waves. At Dollar tree there were usually 2 titles per slot with 10+ copies of each book. Here there were 7-8 titles per slot with only 2-3 copies per book. Lots of Superman as you would expect with the movie out, lots of younger oriented title too (Krypto based on his animated show forma few years back, Batman The Brave & Bold, Batman & Scooby Doo, stuff based on the JL animated series and some of the various Batman animated shows for example) but a pretty broad spectrum of DC stuff from 2000 on (there were a few pre-2000 selections, David's Young Justice, Byrne Superman, but not many and nothing earlier than '87 or so).

I picked up a handful of books that caught my eye that either I didn't already own, or that I might want an easily accessible copy to reread here in the next week or so. Here's a look at what I grabbed, but there were lots more stuff than just this...
