Mother's Day and the Mystery of the Mary Marvel Wristwatch

A Mother's Day salute to my mom, who always encouraged my imagination and love of comics. Years after she passed, I discovered something that may have explained that understanding.

Wonderful, Chris--thank you for sharing. I love the picture of your mother with the Batcycle.

And somehow, it's very fitting that the Marvel Family may have influenced your mother and enriched your relationship. Holy moley, I'm teary.

Thanks Mom, for my Megos...and everything.

That was a beautiful story. And such a touching tribute for Mother's Day.

It is easy to see that she was an amazing parent.

                Wonderful story.

I also inherited my love of fantasy, superheroes and toys from my mom.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Thanks folks. I really appreciate the feedback, and the stories of other moms who helped fan the flame of imagination.

Same here as well. Grew up having Star Trek & Star Wars books and models (bought and built by mom) throughout our living room. And would be regularly pestered (and even bribed) to read Tolkien, A Wrinkle in Time and stuff like that.

                      Wonderful story

I agree with your theory on the watch being out away to be fixed and then forgotten. I know I have more than a few things like that around the house right now.

Thank you for the wonderful story, Chris.

I too was lucky to have a mother who indulged all my super-hero obsessions, though she herself was never into comic books due to the understandable reasons of her childhood being pre-Superman's creation and her also being the 13th child growing up without electricity on a farm in Ireland.

Despite this, in the early/mid '70s in Canada, she helped me make several super-hero costumes, namely Superman, Captain Marvel, and Batman. She took me to the newspaper and magazine stores to buy comics, then to the first actual comic book store in our city. She bought me Mego figures for birthdays, Christmases, or any other occasion, really. She took me to see Adam West and the Batmobile at local auto-shows. And she sometimes sat and watched with me the plethora of super-hero or sci-fi shows on TV at the time and through reruns: The Adventures of Superman, Batman, Shazam!, Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk, Star Trek, Buck Rogers, etc. etc. etc.

Think I'll give her a call now. She's 90 and has her own current obsession in doing crossword puzzles, and I like to help her with the tough ones.
