    RIP comics legend Ramona Fradon

    Screen-Shot-2022-09-30-at-3.11.32-PM-2048x1065.png

Trailblazing female comics artist Ramona Fradon has passed away at age 97. Many here will remember her run as the regular artist on DC's Super Friends title, but she drew Aquaman for many years, co-creating Aqualad. She also co-created Metamorpho, Green Flame/Fire and all of the Global Guardians who debuted in Super Friends. She was the regular artist on the Brenda Starr comic strip for many years as well.

My wife and I were lucky to get some sketches from her, personalized through her online store. They proudly hang in our living room.

RIP to, for me, a legend. One of my deepest regrets is not commissioning artwork from her. Her book from Dynamite is great.

Ms. Fradon was a pioneer. Loved her Super Friends and Her silver age work is in a category by itself. And she was a woman working in the industry!! Brilliant. God Speed.

Ramona Fradon's Plastic Man was glorious. After Jack Cole himself, she's the next best Plas artist.

Fradon, in a 2018 interview, on Aquaman:

“When I was drawing him in the '50s, he was nice and wholesome, with a nice haircut and pink cheeks. Very handsome. I had a crush on him. And then you can see what’s happened to him! It got more and more violent and then he lost his hand, then he had a beard and he looked psychotic. You know what? I don’t get it.”

Ditto on the crush, and I don't don't get it either.

This quote is from Comics Journal, which has a nice memorial of her.

Yeah, I was rereading The Art of Ramona Fradon, and in that she's interviewed by Howard Chaykin. It's kind of funny how Ramona repeatedly mentions she feels that comics are meant for kids, and they are too oversexed and violent...while talking to Howard Chaykin! But it's a great interview, and a wonderful book, nonetheless.
