The only thing known about his past is that he's not an Aesir like most of the Asgardians. Also, his unnamed homeland was conquered long ago by Mogul of the Mystic Mountain, who slew Hogun's forebears and laid waste to the land

To me the easiest explanation for the varied nationalities of the Norse gods in th casting would be that the spirits of the gods were re-incarnated through human hosts of various nationalities. Sort of like JMS did with Loki as a woman in his recent run on Thor. You could explain the Donald Blake secret ID this way, too.

Michael W. Barr also used such a plot device years ago in Camelot 3000 to add a little extra intrigue the Knights of the Round Table.

Loki had actually coopted Sif's body and kept her from being reborn. Loki has sence gone back to his original body and Thor was able to release Sif from her "mortal" host.
        Hey! Check out the pictures.

Ah! Makes perfect sense. "Mogul of the Mystic Mountains" being nod to "Mongol", in the almost-nonsensical stream of consciousness cultural mish mash that typifies Marvel "Mythology" invented off the cuff by Lee and Kirby.

Just to reinforce the Asian-influenced origins of Hogun by Lee and Kirby, we also have the fact that Mogul comes from the Mystic Mountain of "Zanadu".

Xanadu being where the ruins of Kubla Khan's palace in Mongolia is located.

Anyone have access to Thor circa #137-145?

Man, that Kirby page is amazing.

I have the Thor Essentials #3 book - it collects those issues, I believe.
