    Sgt Rock Movie

We can blame the success of GI Joe.
The Hollywood Reporter | Heat Vision: 'Sgt. Rock' on duty with Francis Lawrence and Chad St. John

At least Jonah Hex has a comic book precedence for a movie set in the future. I truly cannot see a movie with Rock outside of the WW2 setting.

Until now, “Rock” has retained its World War II setting, with Silver and the studio trying to make a big-budget action adventure movie that was a throwback to flicks like “The Dirty Dozen,” which feature acts of American derring-do.

But a big budget always was an obstacle and, “Inglourious Basterds” notwithstanding, period war movies have not been in vogue in Hollywood for years, unless it was a more serious contemplation of the subject like “Saving Private Ryan.” Also, American jingoism went out of style after 9/11; even this summer’s G.I. Joe movie dropped the toy’s “A Real American Hero” tagline and made the action team internationally focused.

The studio hopes moving the time period to the future solves the dilemma.

Sgt Rock in the future? That sounds like it may not end too well. I would probably pass - - - but I haven't been into Sgt. Rock since I was about 11 or 12 and had a subscription to his comic.

Okay, why not develop a future soldier movie, independent of Sgt. Rock then? Why pay licensing fees if you are not going to pull anything but the name from the license?

This will indeed SUCK. Even if it's a good movie, it can never be a Sgt. Rock movie.

I think they mean the future as in now, not the year 3000. Even so, its bad to take out the element of the character that makes him interesting. And did GI Joe really do that well to warrant more big budget bogus military movies? Its already out on dvd and the toys are rotting on the shelves.

The Movie would be so Much cooler SET in the WW2 Time Period. .. I don't even think a Gerald Butler Cast as Rock could save this Nonsense now...

Looks like the New VP Of Warner's DC Movie Properties needs to be Removed... Making Flicks of Classic characters only to re-write their Mannerizm and Origin sucks worse than Even not having the Movie in the 1st Place... 1st Lobo,.. Now this,.. I shudder to think Whats Next.

G.I.JOE Was a Fun Movie,.. kinda for the Family,.. you Know, above a certain Age Group ofcourse.. Rock Should Be Rated R ... & Bloody.

It would make a little more sense if they wanted to do that with Nick Fury but Sgt. Rock?

I wasn't too thrilled with "Frank Rock" being part of the Suicide Squad revival a few years back....although I think that was retconned to have him be a fake or something....Sgt. Rock is strictly WWII and is supposed to die on the last day of WWII (as per Robert Kanigher I believe).....

This is just another in the long list of "recreating" the characters when it is A) NOT needed and B) taking away what made these characters popular in the first place.

They're just going to keep making movies that strip away anything resembling the characters because people keep spending their money on them saying things like: "I can live with Spidey's web shooters being organic". Give them an inch, they take a mile. The only thing resembling our heroes will be the names soon enough and we can all say goodbye as the comicbook movies stop being made because eventually people will stop spending their money on crap. The ONLY reason I spent money on the Spiderman movies is my boys wanting to see them (especially 3...ugh).
We can only hope they wisen up and look at IronMan as the example. By far the BEST comic book movie to date.

                          Hmmmm....

I'm thinkin' this is DC wanting in on some of tha GI Joe loot. Sure, the live action movie may not have been a big hit; but ther'es been a lot of Joe action the last few years: an animated movie, tv series, figures.... it LOOKS popular.

Maybe they'll end up doing something like the 90's GI Joe.... was it Sgt Storm.... the WW2 guy that gets woken up in the modern era to fight freeze dreid Nazis. (That's be kinda ironic.)

Sgt Rock was the comic book version of the Combat TV show. Lots of heroic acts and gunfights where the prmary cast can get hurt but not killed. As a modern film you can make a somewhat realistic combat sequesnce with the boys of Easy but as others have said Why pay for SGT Rock if that is what you want any combat squad in any war can be used. If a film maker wants a name to capitalize for marketing it should be Call of Duty or Brothers in Arms these Video game franchises have huge following and a built in fanbase (Like Doom and resident Evil)

If you were to modernize it I could live with easy in a modern war the characters could translate (of course now it would have to be Echo co) but the current wars have become poison hits too close to home

Sgt Savage and that was really driven by Joe Kubert's fight with DC over rock so he worked with hasbro to create an analog joe and drew all the card art for it
