    Doc Savage movie

Just saw this over at superherohype, thought the Doc Savage fans would be interested:

Orci & Kurtzman Producing Doc Savage
    Source:Ain't It Cool News October 26, 2009

Ain't It Cool News has learned that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek) are producing the adaptation of the Doc Savage comics. Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon) is set to write the script. The site asked Black about the project:

I asked this with dread in my belly, and Shane passed the test by saying the character can not be separated from the 30s. This is correct. Right now, he is preparing to write the script. He has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It will be an original DOC SAVAGE story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of Lester Dent's work.

"Doc Savage" was originally published in American pulp magazines during the 1930s and 1940s. He was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic at Street and Smith Publications, with additional material contributed by the series' main writer, Lester Dent

These guys seem to be the "hot ticket of the week" right now, and are linked one way or another, to everything of late. Still, I hope ol' Doc breaks through the development blackhole he has been in since the eighties, and a film is finally made....Hopefully a good one!?

Why doesn't anyone ever just take an original story an turn it into a movie? why do we always have someone try to capture the "feel" of the characters instaed of the stories that made them great? I just hope they get it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        >why do we always have someone try to capture the "feel" of the characters instaed of the stories that made them great?

It seems to be producerspeak for "we're gonna change it all but don't want the old fans to start a negative hype campaign online."

        >Shane passed the test by saying the character can not be separated from the 30s.

The first issue or so of the 70's Marvel comic was set in the modern era. That changed in a hurry 'cos so many fans were displeased.

Yeah, reading the Thousand Headed Man right now and its got everything needed for a movie. I don't get why they can't just pick one of the Doc pulp stories and adapt it for a movie.

Agreed. Pulp stories, especially the adventure ones, are an untapped resource. Can't imagine why Hollywood doesn't at least try to make an effort to bring some of those to the screen with the story and characters intact.

I guess the times they have tried, the box office wasn't too good, but they always seem to make the money back once they hit DVD.

They seem to looooove to rely on crappy CGI instead of story. If they would just lay off of the CGI and realize they have a built in smart audience that doesn't really need an effect to imagine what is going on, they would do well.
