    Classic comic ads

I just finished rereading Power Man and Iron fist 51 (june 78)

The comic is good in all it 70's spledor:

    "CHRISTMAS!"

"Doors locked. No problem JUst means I'll make my entrace ---POWER MAN style!"

    "Freeze Turkeys!"

But what really took me down memory lane was the Hostess one page comic (This one was Thor and Twinkies) -I loved these things. I would read these with the same excitement I would read the comic with. It was like the prize in your cereal box - something fun and extra.

It also has a Star Wars action figure ad. No photos of figures - just artists drawing of representations of the figures. I would love to see ads like this for some of todays figs. This one didn't have Megos in it but they were done the same way - artists didn't draw the charater - they drew the figures.

I love the Hostess ads. Curt Swan did the art for most of the DC ads. It made them seem like legitimate parts of the comic!

The best toy ads were from Heroes World and were mostly drawn by the Joe Kubert school. Most of them have a touch of Kubert in there.

Did Luke Cage actually say "Sweet Christmas" in that one?

it was the innocence of the 70's that makes it so cool.....of course we all have great nostalgia for that period and so it means more to us than it would to people of earlier or later generations

I loved the hostess ads. I also remember this one, but it is hard to look at it fondly now knowing what has happened with his life.

I also ordered these and were disappointed when they came in the mail, but did actually play with those little 2-dimensional fellows.
          It's all good!

It brings back some great memories when I see or think of those ads.
How about the ad for the Spidey and Cap Ricochet Racers set where they shoot the heroes through the giant web.!

I really love those old ads for toys and food like Hostess. I love how a lot of them told a story and made you wanna go right out and get whatever they advertised. I also love that they were drawn, not photographed or done in CGI like the more modern ones are.

I clearly remember that OJ ad for Dingo Boots.

I'm willing to be almost everyone remembers the Dr. J/ Rick Barry ads for Spalding in the late 70s.

Yeah, those Hostess ads were the best. Here is a link to a site that I think has been posted before, but it is well worth posting again because it is a great collection of those ads. (categorized by hero and Marvel/DC......Captain Marvel had nine appearances and Green Arrow was a "one hit wonder"?????)

Yeah, looking at old comics, it is sometimes the ads that bring the biggest feeling of nostalgia to me. And don't forget about the great EK ads like the one in my signature.

I really like the DC house ads of the 60's and the GI Joe ads of the same period.

My faves were always the "Put a Mego supehero in your stocking this Xmas", the AT Joe ads and te SMDM/Maskatron ads. Great stuff. Big Jim's PACK was another fave. My all time fave though is the "Mego in your stocking" ad. I cut that out of a comic and kept it for years when I was little.

                          Some personal favourites!

This and a cowboy boot ad (for Dingo I think?) were about the only advertising ol' Johnny ever had in comic book form:

Ahh, Bulletman. I know a lot of Joe collectors hate him, but I always wanted one!

I was in high school when this ad hit. I was floored when I saw it...my first exposure to the SuperPowers toy line. Probably the last time I surprisingly stumbled upon a toy line instead of hearing about it for months before it eventually came out. At the time I was of two minds..one telling me I was too old for toys, and the other telling my other mind to shut up, and get to a store and buy these suckers!!

                          "Crayons taste like purple!"

DC slapped that SP ad on the back of books for three years! But what a great ad it was. I think that was the first time I saw the Super Powers figures, and I nearly plotzed. I was 9 when the line came out, and it blew my mind that figures existed of Flash, GL, Hawkman and Brainiac!
