So over the years writers have explored the fact that Batman needs a Robin.
In some ways it seems like often Wolverine as a character seems to "work" better when you pair him up with a female teen.
We saw the early magic when they introduced Kitty Pryde to the X-Men, and I think part of the problem with the Kitty and Wolverine Miniseries and her becoming "Shadowcat" was that it did mark a kind of coming of age for Kitty, and changed their dynamic somewhat.
