no plans for a superman movie?

After years of Warner Bros trying to get another Superman movie off the ground following Returns, DC Entertainment is now saying that it doesn't have current plans for the character.

It's surprising, given that for years the iconic superhero has been on of DC and Warners' biggest cash cows, but not shocking given the troubles that have plagued a new solo outing and The Justice League.

"We actually don't have any current plans for Superman," DC Entertainment chief Diane Nelson tells MTV.

"We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman."

Yet we doubt that it'll stay that way for too long - he's too valuable to leave on the subs bench - but perhaps it signals that once again the new mega-company is trying to figure out how best to use him...

I don't buy it. Doesn't Warners have to get a Superman movie made by 2013 or something, or else share the profits with the Siegel estate? Unless of course, an agreement is reached between them and DC/Warners.

I suspect the statement is a not so sublte way to say to scriptwriters and directors
"if we talked to you about a superman film recently don't call us, we'll call you...if we haven't talked we want your ideas send it in"

Makes sense to me. They havent even really begun to work out a future deal for the character with the Siegel/Schuster estate (as far as I've heard anyways). Why pump out a multimillion dollar movie to promote a character you may not have access to shortly thereafter.....or if some reports are true...a character that will have to be heavily revamped from the one we all know currently.
That money is better spent on characters for whom you have a clear title.

If and when all parties come to an agreement, or if an agreement cannot be made, then we will see movement on this issue. Either a new traditional supes film, or a film introducing the revamped character using the elements of the mythos DC claimed in the court case.

The ball is probably going to wind up back in DC's court after the whole thing with the Siegel Estate is settled so they'll probably do a film after that point, instead of rushing it just to do so...

I hope its a dodge on Nelson's part so that Warners/DC can announce something next year at their 75th anniversary. They have to start filming by 2011 to beat the rights issue with Siegle/Shuster estate, so it's probably not.

As lukewarm as Superman Returns was in terms of ticket sales and merchandising, Warners/DC may think the sun has set on the Man of Steel.

I hope that's not the case. I'd love to see an action-packed Superman film using today's technology.

Warner has to have something in production by 2011 or it goes back to the Siegel and Schuster people.

                  Hmmmm....

If someone's willing to make an Ant-Man movie I have NO doubt SOMEONE is working on a Superman one.

I doubt anyone will see anything of Superman until the studio gets this Siegal settlement behind them. To do anything right now without a clear pathway as to distribution of royalties would be a waste of time. I think that is why the studio made a definitive statement that no new projects will be developed for now. Maybe in five years...

^^^ Warner has to get something going, or the rights will revert to the Seigels.
