it's based on the acclaimed minisereis and is a wonderfull way to explain how a JLA born in the rebooted dc universe came about during the "fallow period" from the last all star comics jsa appearance in the early 50's and the showcase 4 appearance of barry allen flash. just don't expect superfreinds or even Timm JLU here it's a unique take and design style.

Too bad the new Crisis movie doesn't spin off of this.

the new film is going to be based on the JLA Earth 2 run (also in graphic novel form) which I think was the first time post the original COIE the idea of crossing between alternate earths was revistited. Prior to that alternate histories like Kingdom come and new frontier were considered "elseworlds" which was DC's way to have alternate earths but pretend only the post COIE continuity counted.

most of the highpoints of the orginal comic are in the dvd a few things are different and bascially issue 1 of the comic is compressed into the credits and a few passing references.

while having a historical cold war perspective helps to understand some of the characterizations it isn't required (which i always felt watchmen needed the reader to understand the fears of the cold war it it just doesn't work)

^^ I know what its based on, It was first implied that it was going to be a silver age style crossover with the JSA, too. Now its based on Morrison and Quitely's graphic novel(man I hate that term, its a comic book) without any of the look of the comic. Pass.

Love New Frontier. I have the soundtrack CD and the absolute edition of the collected comic. Fantastic stuff.
