Don't know if it has been mentioned here before. But, finally, after so many years and pleads for Warner Bros. to release the 80's Ruby-Spears Superman cartoons; It'll be release on Nov 03,2009. This is one of my favorite Superman animated shows. Art was done by the late Gil kane. I really Like the yellow S emblem on the cape.

Definitely in for this one. After Super Powers steered the Super Friends series to better writing and a more sophisticated storytelling style, this took up the gauntlet until Timm and co. started their shows. I really liked the look of the series too, and the intro melding the John Williams theme and the classic Adventures of Superman voice over dialog is my all time favorite Superman intro!

I didn't really embrace this when it first aired (although I loved the comic reboot) so I may check this out to see if I like it better now.

this show resonated with me with the first episode it was adult enough to watch as a teenager but safe enough for kids to watch. Michael bell's luthor captured the daddy warbucks era luthor of the Byrne reboot well. the only downside to the show is they couldn't used classic supes villians so they created replacements. Luckily the writing and art made up the that weakness. I am so very glad this show is finally coming out

Gil Kane did the character designs and they were also influenced by the films. The stories were based in the Byrne/Wolfman reboot era.

To me it's the second best TV cartoon version of Superman after the Timm series.

The back-up features to me are better than the leads.

With DC doing back-up series now, I wouldn't mind seeing a Superman when he was young back-up series in one of the books that's currently not featuring Superman.

Ruby Spears Superman.........

I just finished viewing the 13 episodes from my friends "Bootleg copy" (he purchased it years ago at a Comic convention), piciture quality is 6 out of 10 (Hopefully they'll clean up the graphics nicely for the new release). To my surprise.....All of the Superman stories were lengthy and very good. The Art work on Superman is "To Die for". Can't wait to get this DVD on November 3rd, for $19.99. I wish all Superman cartoons could look like he did for this release. Supes looks like he was drawn for the comics by kerry Gammil (I Luv it). Gil kane also captured the blue eyes and the yellow emblem on the cape to a tee.
P.S. Clark Kent looks good too!

This was truly an awesome show. It's fantastic news that this super rare Superman series is finally coming to DVD. And it's been what? 21 years since it aired?

I must admit, when I first saw this, I had to get used to the sound of Beau Weaver as Superman and his clutzy nerdy version of Clark Kent after having been used to the voice of the late Danny Dark on the SuperFriends for a solid decade. It's amazing that the voice of Lois Lane was Ginny McSwain, who was ironically, the voice casting director herself.
They featured veteran voice overs from the SuperFriends. Mark Taylor, the voice of Jimmy Olsen, was previously Firestorm. The voice of Perry White was Stanley Ralph Ross, the chief writer of both the live action Batman and Wonder Woman TV series. Voice wise, he was also the voices of Gorilla Grodd and he succeeded the late Ted Cassidy as the newer voice of Brainiac on the SuperFriends. Also, Jack Angel and Bill Calloway who were alos SuperFriends voice overs did minor roles in this series and B.J. Ward reprised her role as Wonder Woman in "Superman and Wonder Woman VS the Sorceress of Time."

Michael Bell's voice has been heard everywhere. He's another Frank Welker, among them, he was Zan, Gleek, and the Riddler on the SuperFriends and before this Superman series, he voiced over Duke and wide variety of hero and villain characters on G.I.JOE. So, he used the Duke voice in a comical villain note for Lex Luthor and he could be quite hilarious at times. Jessica Morganberry was obviously an animated version of Eve Tessmacher.

Jonathan and Martha Kent: Martha was voiced by veteran voice actress Tress MacNeil and Alan Oppenheimer, who in live action was Dr. Rudy Wells on the Six Million Dollar Man and is mostly remembered as a voice over for many Filmation cartoons was Jonathan Kent.

For those who may or may not know, the musical score from this animated series is now available on CD. I found an incredible music collection called Superman: The Music 1978-1988. It is an 8 disc CD set that includes a booklet. The 8 disc set has the musical scores from ALL 4 Superman movies, even Superman 4. It also has the music from this rare animated series, and the last disc has extras and source music. So if you love the music from Superman, I highly recommend this set. On the downside though, it is expensive. It cost me over 100 bucks, but it is worth it. I found it on Screen Archives Entertainment.

I find it ironic that not long after this was released, this animated series has been announced and is coming to DVD.

Looking forward to this. When it originally aired I was still on the farm, and we couldnt get the cable channels in rural areas back then so I never saw this. Always heard good things, so I'm really anxious to see if it meets the hype!!!

I think I only saw an episode or two when this originally aired but I'll definitely pick it up. Who knows if or when they'll release the remaining Superfirends stuff so this will tide me over.
