    The DCU "Style Guide"

Reading up on how much the DCU Super Powers line relied on the 1982 DCU Style Guide, got me wondering how many incarnations there had been of this document. It obviously wasn't something they constantly updated in the eighties since they mention Supergirl being developed in her Hot Pants look as opposed to the headband costume.

Has anyone ever seen a DCU Style Guide? How comprehensive is it? I would imagine it was used in-house and for licensing ala The Super Powers products of the eighties. I understand that many of the Superhero poses ended up on T-shirts, drinking glasses and other product?

I seem to recall mention that Jose Garcia Lopez and George Perez being involved in different versions of it. What other artists contributed a version over the years?

I don't know if there is a schedule, but it's been updated and or completely revamped since the 1982 style guide. While there was artwork created for licensing before (much of it done during the 66 Bat-craze) 82 was the first year DC REALLY tried to cohesively license their characters with a standard look. Garcia Lopez handled most of the chores, with Perez handling the Titans pieces, I believe. Shortly after the 82 guide, Luthor, Braniac and Supergirl were updated to their then new looks. Nightwing was added to the Titans, and Lopez did some new Titans pieces. The 82 artwork was used well up into the early 90s, when new Lopez stuff began to appear on comic-style merchandise released around Batman Returns. Since then, its been updated every few years it seems, with Lopez, Eduardo Baretto, Jon Bognadove, Norm Breyfogle, Jim Lee, Mike Zeck and others contributing as well.

Of course in the last few years, DC has marketed quite a bit of "retro" product using the early 80s style guide art, such as the school folders at Target and Wal-mart.

I'd love to have an 82 style guide, but they usually fetch quite a hefty price on ebay.
