DC Comics Classic Cartoon Collection Checklist: What We Have and What We Need

With the recent releases and release announcements of the old classic DC Comics cartoon shows to DVD this year, I thought I'd make a checklist of the shows that Warner Home Video has released so far, what's coming soon, and what we need to complete our video libraries.

Everyone's opinions may differ as to which shows would be considered classic by now. MY classic list of DC animation consists of the Filmation cartoons, including the 1977 Batman and 1981 Shazam, the 2 Ruby Spears shows, both of which are on the way, and the long running SuperFriends series and all its incarnations by Hanna Barbera.

    WHAT WE HAVE:

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN 1966: Only 36 episodes of the total 60.

THE ADVENTURES OF AQUAMAN 1967: The Complete Series

FILMATION'S DC SUPER HEROES 1967: The Complete Series

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF BATMAN 1977: The Complete Series

THE ALL NEW SUPER FRIENDS HOUR 1977: The Complete Series on 2 volumes

SUPER FRIENDS 1978: The Complete Series

CHALLENGE OF THE SUPER FRIENDS 1978: The Complete Series

PLASTIC MAN 1979:(Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Show) Coming Soon!!!
(Staright Plastic Man episodes only. No Plastic Family and Baby Plas)

SUPER FRIENDS: THE LOST EPISODES 1983: The Complete Series
    Just Released!!

SUPER FRIENDS: THE LEGENDARY SUPER POWERS SHOW 1984:
    The Complete Series

SUPER POWERS TEAM: GALACTIC GUARDIANS 1985: The Complete Series

RUBY SPEARS SUPERMAN 1988: Coming Soon!!!!

    WHAT WE NEED:

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN VOLUME 2: 1967-1968:
The remaining 24 of 60 episodes that ran with Aquaman and Batman toons

THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY 1966-1968: The Complete Series

THE ADVENTURES OF BATMAN: 1968: The Complete Series

SUPER FRIENDS 1973: The Complete Original Series

SUPER FRIENDS HOUR 1980: The Complete Series: Season one shorts

SUPER FRIENDS 1981: The Complete Series: Season two shorts

SHAZAM 1981: The Complete Series: I sure hope the live and animated Shazam series does not have the same legal problems plaguing the Batman TV series.

Not included in this list are the Fleisher Superman toons, which truly stand alone,
The Bruce Timmverse animated series, Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, and Justice League (JLU)
The Batman, Teen Titans, Legion of Super Heroes, and Batman: Brave and the Bold.

Although give it until 2012, and Batman: The Animated Series will be a classic by then.

Anyway, for those of you who love the classic Filmation, Hanna Barbera, and Ruby Spears interpretations of the DC Heroes, here is your checklist for your video library.

    Cheers.

DC must have settled the Superboy thing, since Conner Kent is back. Maybe the toons will show up now.

Great list, but didn't you forget the 1978 World's Greatest Super Friends? I think you said its only 8 episodes? I bet the lump that in with another set, maybe the 80 or 81 shows.

You know, you're right!! I can't believe I left that off. But on the list of What We Need is the World's Greatest SuperFriends, only the year of that show is 1979. 1978 was the Challenge series and the 16 episodes w/ the Wonder Twins. The 1979 series was indeed 8 episodes with the main core group and the Wonder Twins. These were the episodes that borrowed elements from great lterature stories like Aladdin (Rub Three Times For Disaster), Camelot (Space Knights of Camelon), The Hobbitt (The Lord of Middle Earth), 20,000 League Under the Sea (Terror at 20,000 Fathoms), Frankenstein (SuperFriends Meet Frankenstein), and the Wizard of Oz (Planet of Oz). This was the season that had the evil SuperFriends (Universe of Evil), The Kandorians (Terror at 20,000 Fathoms) and the return of Lex Luthor and Mr. Mxyztplk. (Lex Luthor Strikes Back and Planet of Oz).

          Cheers.
