    Spider-Man movies

Why does his mask ALWAYS gets ripped off in the climatic scenes...and we ALWAYS have to put up with Tobey Maguire's STUPID face in Spider-Man action sequences???

We should only get to see Maguire play Peter Parker...NOT Spider-Man.

I WANT MY SPIDEY TO BE SPIDEY...PERIOD.

That's the reason I can't warm up to the Spidey movies.

Same thing applied to the character of Venom...with Topher Grace's face all over the map as well...good grief...how annoying.

    ARGH!!!

Well, valid observational complaints aside.......thank Gawd we can nitpick the movies and wish for more. At least we aren't having to beg for the basics!!!

Interesting take on the mask thingie...

The fallacy of the masked superhero:

The Fallacy is this: You can’t cast a major movie star as your masked superhero and expect him to stay in his or her mask throughout the entire picture. At some point you have to remind your audience just who it is you spent major movie star bucks to get in the costume in the first place. The problem is, you’re depicting a character who’s known for … well, more surface than substance, let us say. In other words, we’ve come to see the suit.

Clark has to take of the glasses, too.(or, put them on......as the situation would dictate!).

I was OK with the spider-man mask away scenes - they were purposeful

the venom mask aways - RIDICULOUS

They kind of pushed it in Spidey 2 with TWO unmasked action sequences, but they did serve purposes to the story, so I forgive them.

Topher was totally miscast as Venom anyway. No fault of his, and I get what they were going for "evil Peter Parker", but his face and those teeth were just dumb. I kept waiting for Red Foreman to show up and say "Drop the dentures, dumb@$$."

DING! Right answer! It's one of them things that doesn't translate so good from comic to film, 'cos almost no actor is gonna want to keep their mug covered for the majority of a film, and almost no produer is gonna want that either; since it's better advertising to put the big name out there in front of everybody.

That was one (and I mean ONE) of the problems with the Judge Dredd movie. Stalone wouldn't keep the mask on for the entire film, even though he was playing a character who was known for NEVER being seen sans mask.

It's called screen time in the movie business. Tobey is the star so he has to have screen time, not a stuntman or CGI character. It's true of all heroes and just the industry in general. Tobey can't negotiate a contract if no one ever sees him on the big screen. I think that played a bigger role in part three than in part two. In part two those unmasked moments carried alot of story responsibilities, in part three lesser so.

I have to agree on Topher Grace being miscast. I think it might have been better to go with the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon (via Ultimate Spider-Man) origin of Eddie Brock and the characteristics and build of that Brock.

Having a different voice which seemed to be made up of many voices (again as in the cartoon) would have helped the menace factor as well. But my main complaint with 3 is that there were too many villains. I really believe that any superhero movie doesn't need more than one main villain (Superman II is an exception but they functioned as one group). With the Sandman plot going, there couldn't be that much focus on Brock as Venom and the character suffered.

I've only really liked the first Spidey film anyways. Two was ok, but not great, and three kinda did some shark jumping in my book. Hopefully the next one (or two if they film them back to back as rumored) recapture a little more of the 60's Spidey magic the first film had. Dont shove in too many characters, and end up shortchanging them as 3 did, just pick a decent villian, and let him and Spidey duke it out in the grand old wisecrackin' Marvel fashion.

As for Topher Grace...he would have made a good Peter Parker...anything else...nah! Out of curiosity, has he done anything since Spidey three came out?
