    Blackest Night

So, what did everybody think of #1?

    I'll post no spoliers here.

Pretty freakin' creepy, the list of the undead was a Who's Who of the DCU, the ending was a big wow!

Now I need to get me one of those Black promo rings. My dealer didn't get any.

Wasn't that just a great freakin' intro to Blackest Night and a creepy spotlight on Black Hand? This guy is going to be one badass now that's right up there with other great GL foes like Sinestro, Star Sapphire and uh, Hector Hammond?

The Dead rise, hearts are pulled out literally and figuratively and a very good reason for the Hawks surviving Final Crisis is depicted.

                  Skull-licking fun

Johns does a nice job of catching readers up on the essentials and giving a view of how the dead heroes and villains are treated in the DCU. Left me wanting to see more of Coast City.

Oh and Ivan Reis does a spectacular job drawing most of the DCU.

This is really what a Justice League book should be like, even though the issue is very GL-centric.

I still don't know about all this zombie business but the first issue was excellent in every way I can think of.

                  Just plain fun.

I agree. I'm not a fan of zombie books and Blackest Night is really nothing more then a Zombie book. But, Johns put a nice twist on it.

I had originally posted this in the Johns thread, but it would be better here,

Just a stray thought on Blackest Night #1.
Final Crisis was just as much a statement about Morrison's dislike for strict editorial control & tight continuity as it was a superhero story. After reading the end of the Hawks in Blackest Night, I couldn't help thinking about how Johns had set the Hawks up only to have subsequent writers either disregard or change what he had established. Specifically Kendra. She is nothing like the character Johns introduced in JSA & developed in Hawkman. Not that change can't be good, but Kendra went from being rather unique to just another super-hottie.
Could Johns be using BN to make a statement regarding the way titles that he had established were later mishandled? Could BN be a slap at editorial for allowing the foundations he built on titles, like Hawkman, be destroyed?

BTW, my mentioning of Morrison isn't an invitation to bash him or an attempt to hijack the thread.
                      Hey! Check out the pictures.

An interesting thought there on Johns motivations. I agree on your assessment of the Hawks...what started out great by Johns has deteriorated into absolute crap. That Year One Hawkgirl series did much to ruin the character, particularly the emphasis on her underwear by Pervy Howie Chaykin. Then the Red Arrow stuff in JLA...what a waste of a great character. Instead of focusing on the Hawk's relationship and rich past, or even more of Kendra as an unwed single mother, they settled into making Kendra a tramp, hooking her up with Speedy (sorry, he's ALWAYS going to be Speedy, Kingdom Come or not, he's a sidekick, never gonna be to be A-list...unlike Dick Grayson who could make the jump.) And let's not get started on that Jim Starlin crapola...yikes!

Anyway, good point. Maybe Johns can resolve the whole mess they've made of the Hawks and Aquaman. Then if DC would just kick meddling Dan Didio to the curb...

I'd give good money if DC would just give us back Katar and Shayera Hol and forget all this other mess. And I mean the REAL Katar and Shayera from the Silver Age. It's been long enough now, and every single continuity implant has been voided and overturned. Just go back to what works.

I liked what Johns did with the Hawks though. It DID work. And they mucked it up.

Here, here!! I second the motion!!

I agree that Johns seems to be shoveling against the tide and I fault the front office for that (as well as the other "creators").

That is exactly what editorial should be doing. Not mandating events, but making sure that creators are "sticking to the plan". Hawkman is the best example. When Johns/Morales left it got bad quick. However, there have been arcs on JSA that Johns wasn't involved with that have been just as bad.

I hate to see what will happen to Stargirl now that Johns is officially off JSA.
