What are the best SPECTRE stories?

Which stories featuring The Spectre do you like best?

Is he better solo or on a team like the JSA or interacting with other mystic Vertigo types?

Is he better when he has all the powers of God at his disposal or when he's more depowered and human?

I really liked the Jim Aparo 70's Adventure Comics run.

Kingdom Come is the best story I've seen him in.

The Michael Fleisher- Jim Aparo run is ABSOLUTELY the best take ever done.

In my personal opinion, I think the 3rd series with John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake as the team on the book was the best of all the Spectre series. It showed that Spectre still had a human connection to him. The search for America storyline is fantastic as is the Spear Of Destiny storyline where he goes up against Superman. Didn't care for the series after that with Hal Jordan as the Spectre. Jim Corrigan will always be the Spectre in my eyes. First 8 issues of the 3rd series will get you hooked...guaranteed.

And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
          The beauty that surrounds them
          Isn't it a pity".

Couldn't have said it better, although I really like the Aparo/Fleisher stuff too. And God, that Winnick series just blew didn't it?

I gotta agree about the Ostrander/Mandrake series. Overall, the best interpretation of the Spectre. The character should have ended, similar to Jack Knight, when that series ended. I have to admit though, I am a huge fan of the Murphy Anderson series from the 1960's. I bought all the issues years ago.

By the post title, I thought you were writing about SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion)

I got on a real Spectre kick during the O/M run. I bought every Spectre comic I could afford. I have the full O/M run, Moench run, and the F/A run. I have a smattering of various other issues that date farther back. He's one of my favorite characters. In the 90s it was Jim Corrigan and Jack Knight for me.

AMEN! To me that always was and will be the definitive Spectre.

The Spectre has been blessed by the art of some great pencilers, from Bernard Baily in the Golden Age to Anderson and Adams in the 1960s, Aparo in the 1970s and Mandrake and Ross in the 199Os.

As far as stories go, Ostrander did the best stuff alothough Fleisher's stuff with Aparo was spooky, creepy fun as a kid.
