Well-known industry figures, confirm that Geoff Johns and Jim Lee will head up a new Justice League Of America #1. However it appears that they will get the Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman triumverate to themselves. For a bit.

Dan DiDio’s plan is to use the League books to promote less well known characters in the DC Universe and reduce the roles of the traditional characters - including Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Vixen is expected to be the character DC will be using the JLA books to promote the most.

Don't get me wrong...a Johns/Lee JLA sounds VERY interesting BUT it's sorta crappy that they get the Trinity whereas Dwayne McDuffie was told "hands off" more or less....

And DiDio is an ignorant mofo Any Justice League books should NOT be used "to promote less well known characters in the DC Universe". The JLA should NOT be about fourth-stringers if you want the book to succeed!

And Vixen? Puh-lease put this character to rest.....I'd rather see the new Blue Beetle in the JLA than having Vixen constantly shoved down my throat. Vixen WAS/IS/AND FOREVER WILL BE a crappy 70s character who should have been left back with the DC Implosion. Her big claim to fame is being part of JLA Detriot and we all know how that SUCKED! Nothing anything any of these writers try to do seems to make her interesting IMHO. If you want someone with animal powers, go with ANIMAL MAN...the original, not the wannabee.

It won't be on time if Lee is the artist, unless they give him a year or so lead in time. He has All Star Batman and Wildcats on permenant delay due to his not being able to keep a schedule. James Robinson is already the publicly announced new writer for JLA, so I don't really see this rumor being true. Seems like Johns is already up to his eyeballs with GL and Flash related stuff.

That I have no defense for that...he must have had "Hush" pretty much in the Bag before they started releasing them? I know the reason he gives, is that he's running Wildstorm as well...be GEEZ Man...HIRE some else to do that! An Artist that doesn't draw...makes no sense?!

Same here...looking forward to that! But he's already gained their respect as Nightwing though...so they shouldn't have any trouble excepting him as the new Batman.

The article starts off by saying that given how Marvel has really exploited the Avengers franchise into a successful multi-book line, DC is looking to do the same with JLA once again (ala JLI/JLA/JLE). If that is the case, I can see why they continue to try and push characters like Vixen and Animal Man given how well Marvel has done with their C-List seventies characters. Would you have believed it a few years ago if you were told that Ms Marvel would headline her own title again, and that Power Man and Spiderwoman were fan favourite Avengers?

It does appear as if Johns is clearing his workload for something doesn't it? In the past he's written about four or even five titles at a time. Officially he's only got Adventure Comics, Flash and GL as far as I can tell. He's off JSA and Superman, and Superman Origin is a mini, as is Blackest Night. If Jim Lee needs lead time (which he undoubtably will), I don't see this being an issue.

I think they would be better off promoting the better second stringers and kill off the third string characters instead of their first tier group....but whadda I know?

Your post makes me think of the DEATH OF SUPERMAN era.

I hadn't read comicbooks, really, ever outside of a few here and there
and I had general ideas about stuff.

I remember reading the DOS series and thinking "THIS is the JLA?
Where the HECK is ANYONE I know?" (At least I recognized the lantern
on GG's get-up!)

To be fair, other than Batman and the first 8 issues with Shazam/Captain Marvel, the Giffen era Post Crisis Justice League was quite a success given that it was comprised of second and third stringers like Martian Manhunter, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Mister Miracle, Captain Atom, Black Canary, Oberon etc.

Enough so that it spun out a major crossover event (Invasion), as well as multiple Justice League titles, including a run on Secret Origins, Justice League Europe, Justice League International Quarterly, the longest running Mister Miracle ongoing series, Lobo, L.E.G.I.O.N., and arguably solo series for Doctor Fate and Guy Gardner. Not to mention an (admittedly awful) Television Pilot Movie.

I have no doubt that financially, that half-decade run made DC/Time/Warner some $$$. I believe they even had a bit of a sales spike during Death of Superman, after Giffen and co left. It was only the last few years of a decade long run that it really tanked (along with lackluster spinoffs like Extreme Justice, and Justice League Task Force) commercially and creatively.

With that said, I think things like Giffen's Justice League and Bendis' New Avengers are kind of a creative lighting in a bottle that cannot be manufactured into a "franchise" by editorial. More a happy accident of circumstances where certain characters were or were not available to the creative team. In the case of Giffen, no Superman, Flash, or Wonder Woman, and in the case of Bendis, Marvel greenlighting Spiderman and Wolverine in spite of editorial friction.

So what you're saying is that once again, rather than come up with anything new or interesting, DC will be going to the well of quarter-box ideas from the 1980s...this time to try and recreate the Giffen JLA, JLI, JLE.

Meh.

My only consolation is that 20 years from now, the idiot in charge of the company will be doing his damndest to kill off every member of the Dan Didio JLA, including (hopefully) the new Blue Beetle.
