It's called beating a dead horse. lol With the success of the recent BSG, they are trying to cash in on every angle they can. There have been multiple versions of Star Trek and Star Wars over the years, so why not? I remember watching BSG 1980 when it came out. Yikes it was bad. It could have been interesting if they had kept the original cast landing on Earth. -
With all of its flaws, the original BSG had a lot of heart and Baltar and Lucifer were amusing, but even I admit that BSG 1980 was a clear attempt to tighten the budget belt and appeal to a kiddie demographic... and who could ever forget the Super Scouts (I am trying to, but to no avail!!! LOL).

I actually think that could be neat. If done as a way to make the scenario more serious rather than "7 o'clock family hour." If Star Trek can now have multiple universes, why not Galactica? Though if I had a choice of what to revisit, I would rather see an original season Galactica than a 1980 story. It's all good!Comment

Didn't Wolfman Jack make an appearance on Galactica 1980? Seems I remember something weird like that. lolComment

Does this mean that Robert Reed will be in this comic?
While I was never into BSG as a kid, for some reason I never missed Galactica 1980 even though I found it largely disappointing.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

Was Galactica 1980 cancelled mid-story? I know there are a few cancelled shows with dangling plotlines that I would love to see continued/concluded.
Given that most Sci Fi shows, even the failed ones, have a small fanbase of some sort, probably numbering in the thousands, a comic book is a low cost way to service a cult audience. Also keep in mind it's in the continuity of the original BSG, so I'm sure they are taking some of the new material from the comics and expanding it into the 1980 timeline.
I hear Pushing Daisies and Reaper are both coming back as comic books as well, and I'm delighted.Comment

Kind of like the idea of Data originating in Questor (or whatever it was called) before being brought back in Star Trek TNG.Comment

Oh, and to get on topic once more, Galactica 1980 was really odd. I never knew about it until Sci-Fi aired it back in the 90s. Does any TV show ever survive the dreaded retool?

Acutally, Data also originates partially from the aborted Star Trek: Phase II television series, and the character of Xon, the full Vulcan science officer. I was re-reading some info on this series last night, and it sounds like Xon was going to try to experience humanity as much as possible, so he could understand his fellow officers. Sounds a lot like Data. Of course, Riker and Troi were pretty much Decker and Illia as seen in ST:TMP, and intended for Phase II. From what I understand, much of ST:TNG's first few seasons was left over bits and pieces of Phase II from 10 years prior.
What happened to Xon between the development of Phase II and TMP? Was Leonard Nimoy going to come back to the TV show? I know Decker and Illia were leftover parts of the Phase II development as well, but I hadn't made that connection between Troi and Riker (which is obvious once you mentioned it!). Given the oddball painfully dated (for 1986) initial episodes of TNG such as The Planet of the Blonde Nymphomaniacs, and The Planet of the Polygamous Black People, I can see how that were old scripts from the seventies!
It would be interesting to see where Xon might have fit into TMP (or didn't).
I had picked up the Star Trek Lost Series book a couple of months ago in a dollar bin, I should dig it out.
Thanks, Phase II sounds really interesting.
If IDW decided to make a Star Trek Phase II comic book, would you guys pick it up? It would be the obvious next step given the fact that they are just finishing up the "Final Mission" series covering the last year of the first 5 year mission.Last edited by samurainoir; Jun 24, '09, 5:08 PM.Comment

Xon was indeed meant as a Questor type character accorrding to the bible for Phase:II, but if you read the scripts that were written for the series, he comes off as more of a annoying version of Spock. None of the writers picked up on the "trying to learn to be human" schtick at all....Of course, Roddenberry might have added that in at a later date when he might have pulled some of his infamous re-writes???
As for Nimoy, the book answers that question quite nicely, so I wont ruin it for you here. It really is a great book!!!"Crayons taste like purple!"Comment
