Helen Slater To Appear On Smallville

Former Supergirl star Helen Slater has signed on to appear on the CW's "Smallville." Slater will play the aunt of the show's recently cast Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort).

Slater will appear in the sixth episode of the upcoming season, two weeks after ex-Superman Dean Cain ("Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman") is scheduled to appear.

Slater has recently done guest gigs on "Crossing Jordan," "Grey's Anatomy" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

And if she's Supergirl's aunt, that makes her...

...Lara, Superman/Clark/Kal-El's mom. Unless it's some previously unknown character.

          I always loved Helen Slater...

HATED the movie Supergirl , but loved Helen as Supergirl.

Too bad I also hate Smallville so I don't plan on watching it

Unless they mean she's her adoptive aunt or something like that.

That would be interesting! Particularly since Jor-El and Zod have only ever been disembodied presences.

They are saying that Kara was in a state of suspended animated beneath the dam all this time and that she left Krypton as a teenager at the same time as baby Kal-el. She would have certainly known her aunt and uncle Jor-El and Lara if that were the case.

Have they mentioned who Dean Cain is playing? There was suggestions that it was a villian.

Kryptonsite says Cain will play a villain. Sounds like a Vandal Savage-type.

Jor-El was seen...ONCE. On the flashback episode set in 1961. Tom Welling portrayed him.

Very cool. I really appreciate how much they honor the past with these stunt castings. I can definitely see Dean Cain playing a bad guy, and the potential as Vandal Savage (his show name will be Dr. Curtis Knox) sounds like a great potential storyline.

An update on Slater's role, per Kryptonsite:

                      SPOILERS

                      Episode #7-6: "Lara"
                      Air Date: Nov. 1, 2007
                      Guest Stars: Helen Slater (Lara)

                      - UPDATED 8/9/07: This one is called "Lara," and according to S.A.M., we'll also see Kara's father, Zor-El, in this episode.

                      - UPDATED 8/5/07: One-time Supergirl Helen Slater guest stars as "Supergirl's aunt," which we can only take to mean that she is playing Lara, Clark's Kryptonian mother.

That's right! I forgot about that. It will be interesting to see how they do it if/when Jor-El appears on the show. I don't think old-age make-up on Tom Welling would work.

Given the fact that he's the voice of Jor-El, I always wondered if they would let Terrance Stamp play him if/when Jor-El finally shows up.

So we've had Linda Carter show up in the past season. I can't remember, did any actors from the 1950's incarnation of Superman ever show up? I think Lois Lane is still alive isn't she?

I would have loved to see Richard Pryor on the show just for laughs.

Anyone want to place their money down on Adam West stunt-casting?

Noel Neil (serial Lois Lane, and Lois on Adv. of Supes from season 2-on) and Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen, Adv. of Supes) were in Superman Returns. I think they were both on Lois and Clark too, along with George Reeves' other Lois, Phyliss Coates. None have been on Smallville yet. Smallville's stunt casting thus far has been Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Terrence Stamp, Lynda Carter, and now Slater and Cain. Oh and of course...Annette O'Toole. Her real-life husband Michael McKean played Perry White in one episode as well.

And in non-comic related stunt casting, Tom Wopat played Jonathan Kent's Dodge Charger-drivin' buddy.
