    Smallville season finale

Okay, I know a lot of you here loathe this show. I've always defended it here. This season had it's ups and downs, but overall, I think it was headed in a good direction with Clark actually being heroic and not pining over Lana, moping on the farm, etc. Other than the train wreck that was the Lana returns storyline, it was enjoyable, and promised a BIG finish.

Boy, did it disappoint in the end.

Smallville almost always pulls out a great cliffhanger ending, but this one was a dud.

    SPOILERS:

That big mega-throwdown with Doomsday EVERYONE was expecting? Clark never even threw a punch. He picked him up and ran off with him, jumping up in the air and slamming him into Ollie's new geo-thermal plant and blew him up/and or buried him at the Earth's core (it's very vague what happened here). What the? The whole point of Doomsday is he's a big unstoppable bruiser. Where's the sound-barrier breaking punches? I think their cut budget this year really hindered this. Without this, the finale sucked eggs. THIS is what the season kept promising us, and it didn't deliver...AT ALL.

Impulse and Black Canary show up and do NOTHING. They were token background pieces so they could say "we have Justice League in this one! Please watch fanboys!" At least Rokk/Cosmic Boy's appearance provided something to the plot (and the only cool part of the cliffhanger, Lois is now lost in time, probably in the 31st century with the Legion).

Jimmy Olsen isn't OUR Jimmy Olsen? So the guy we thought was Jimmy for years is the classic Jimmy's older brother? WHAT??? I don't know if they have shark like creatures on Krypton, but if they do, we just jumped it. Now "Jimmy", and Aaron Ashmore are gone from the show. Huh? I knew something was up with him marrying Chloe, getting hooked on pain meds, and finding out Clark's secret. But we all know he was SUPPOSED to be Jimmy for all the seasons he's been on the show. This is just BAD.

And all that BS about Davis Bloome being a good man and they need to separate him from the beast. Suddenly all the pathos Sam Witwitter has managed to bring to the character goes out the window for pure shock value. Another *** moment.

I think that's the problem with this episode. Season finales should ride that delicate balance of mixing the expected/anticipated with the unexpected. It should all be WOW moments, not *** moments.

Okay, I'm done. I won't get into Clark's abandonment of his human side based on "human" Davis murdering "Jimmy". I do kind of wonder if Clark wasn't somehow replaced by the Kryptonian like Eradicator, like the comics Doomsday aftermath. I'm sure it will be resolved in the first episode of next season.

But I'm not sure I'll be watching it.

I haven't been a watcher in several years with the exception of the great Legion episode this year...sounds like I didn't miss much though....definitely shark-jumping with "Jimmy Olsen". Who goes by the nickname Jimmy when that's his brother's ACTUAL name? Maybe this show needs to go away before it does anymore damage to the Superman mythos.

I love Smallville and I was also doing the "what the..." during the finale. I have watched since episode #1 and will be back next season though, no doubt. Still one of my favorite shows.
I agree with pretty much everything you said, Chris. Although I'd almost start the "what the..." stuff back when Chloe started being the creature's keeper. That seemed so uncharacteristic of Chloe to me; to lie to Clark and run away and all that stuff.
I thought maybe I missed a part when Clark was fighting Doomsday, big explosion and... cut to funeral....???????
      What happened???? Deleted scene??? LOL
And then he doesn't attend the funeral but hides in the distance? No wrap up to the Doomsday battle with Ollie and "the gang"? Obviously the funeral wasn't the next day so why the lapse?
I also did another "what the.." when they did the "not our Jimmy" reveal. That was kind of dumb. Of course maybe he went by his middle name (I know people that do) and the name James might be important enough to the Olsens to have named their other son James. It's not out of the realm of possibility but of course they had us believing it was THE Jimmy Olsen all along. I did have a problem with that to tell you the truth since Jimmy is supposed to be much younger than Clark & the gang but this kind of was a way to fool us and skirt around that. I remember when the rumor mill was going wild that Chloe was actually going to turn out to be Lois before Erica Durance came on the show as the actual Lois.
The dopiest part to me was the Davis killing "Jimmy" after all they went through to save him. He turned out to be a nutjob anyway. I figured maybe the Legion ring and Lois' disappearance might be the key to the wrap up of this storyline and that they were going to pull another "spin the Earth backwards" time travel fix to it all but that remains to be seen. Perhaps Lois will save the day and rewind the whole last season and "Bobby Ewing will be in the shower" and everything will resume at Chloe's wedding day without the Doomsday scenario?
Yeah, a lot of skipping around and out of character moments in my opinion but still love the show. Hopefully there will be some 'splainin' next season.

I like the show and have watched since day one...even own all 7 seasons on DVD.....but enough already, the show is really tired. they should have ended this season/series with Clark putting on the tights and revealing himself as Superman.

I agree with everything said on this thread. I have watched since season 1 also. I think they will pull lois back from the future and try to fix this mess. I'm sure the emails about this season finale are burying them. I think this upcoming season should be the end. It should show Clark accepting his father and becoming Superman. My two cents.

I liked the season and thought they did a decent job without Lex in it, but I was seriously let down by the finale. Interestingly, I actually liked the way they killed off Jimmy, and geeked out a bit when they corrected the age discrepancy between Jimmy versus Lois and Clark. It was very quick, but they reveal that Jimmy was actually Henry James Olsen. The passing of the camera to the bowtied younger brother was done well, considering it was an admittedly cheap plot point, but how else could they kill a major character without ruining the myth.

The lack of a knock down drag out Clark versus Doomsday battle was criminal though. And Zod's return doesn't exactly make me sit on the edge of my seat for next season. I thought the introduction of Kandor would be much better utilized than that. Maybe the writers can take Millar and Gough out for some drinks so they can get better ideas for next season.

I used to watch it regularly. Now I get the box sets. Imanaged to find most of them at either Wal-Mart or Best Buy for $19.99. (I think it was right around the time that Lana and the guy from Supernatural who was her teacher were an item that I stopped watching - so it's been a while. I think I cam back for most of Season 6 and 7. This is Season 8, right? I haven't picked up Season 7 yet...)

I was DVR-ing this season, but I was DVR-ing a bunch of shows and only keeping five of them at a time, and I wasn't able to catch up.

One of the things that seems to confuse me and lose my interest is the editing. This is supposed to be a show about powers and they seem to edit the show so that you don't get to see much. There were a few episodes with J'onn J'onzz and Bizarro and Lara that just didn't seem complete. Or maybe when they move from Smallville to the Fortress - I must not be paying close enough attention - the transition is too quick. It just seemed a bit disjointed to me.

Maybe I'm the only one noticing that.

I finally got to watch the finale. I have to agree that it was not their best effort. Why wasn't Jimmy's brother and father at the wedding? You'd think they would show up for something like that. The Davis/Doomsday smackdown was a complete let down. Not my favoite cliff hanger.

I have been watching Smallville faithfully since day 1. Being a huge Superman fan I still enjoy the show, yes some of the episodes have been lame but there have been some real solid ones, and I love spotting the little Superman things they stick in from time totime.

I do agree with most of what was said about the Finale. When Clark got to Metropolis and Doomsday was wreacking the place and they started to fight, I just about jumped out of my seat! Then Clark just tackles and jumps/flies Doomsday into plant with a big explosion. What the @*@#? How could they not have Clark at least throw 1 punch, c'mon!

I really hope they pull it out next season, and end with him in the suit. Fingers crossed.

Hey Chris. I use to LOVE Smallville but part of it had to do with a crush I had on Lana. My God. I have had the hots for that chick, privately so, for a long time (I'm married and the wife wouldn't appreciate it). Lana,in my book, is absolutely, positively, beautiful. Okay the writers never put her in a position to be liked as a person, but she was awfully easy on the eyes and after so many years of Clark being close to her, it became difficult for me to watch it without her. There's sort of a point to all of this. I tried to sell a story/scenario to one of the writers who has since been fired, but one of the Fox aviliates really liked it and I had hoped to get it pushed into the series, but alas I doubt that can happen with the way they are going. If your ever interested in hearing my series finale let me know and I'll PM it to you. I think you would have liked it, IF you liked the story lines from the first five seasons. I personally, selfishly, think this would have satisfied alot of fans of the show.
