    Favourite John Byrne

Since we've been talkin' him up in different threads lately...

I haven't really followed his work too closely in recent years, but his eighties stuff is still tops with me.

Oddly enough, rereading FF, X-Men, Alpha Flight, Hulk and various DC titles like Wonder Woman, Superman, and Legends, I find I'm drawn mostly to his West Coast Avengers these days.

I never read the corresponding run on The Avengers (which he didin't supply art for), is it worth checking out?

What is your fondest Byrne recollections?

Fantastic Four definitely. Moreso than his XMen run. A close second would be his XMen Hidden Years. For non big two Next Men was my favorite from him. Sure wish he'd go back to it.

I have a real fondness for his Man of Steel and subsequent Superman run.

Also, his work on X-Men is rarely matched. He and Terry Austin are topped only by Lee/Williams for pencil and ink combination in comics history. I also liked DC's Legends, though most did not.

I can't leave out his work on the original Iron Fist series. Classic stuff. I also think he was the ultimate Captain America artist. I like his version more than anyone's.

True Bryn/ Austin has to be one of the top art teams but i think Neal Adams and Tom Palmer were better

I like almost anything he does in regards to art (for DC nowadays) and will check it out when I hear about it but as for classic stuff I really liked his F.F.
I wasn't a big Marvel fan (definitely not anymore) so F.F. and then Spidey in the late 90's was about it for me.
I also enjoyed his Superman although at the time I was extremely miffed about what DC had done to the Superman family.
I'm probably one of the few that actually looked forward to every issue of his recent Doom Patrol series.

                Fondest Byrne recollections?

First became a fan during his Charlton Space:1999 days. Then the trail went dead...and then came his Marvel era. I never was a big Marvel fan (except for Captain America) but I kept up as well as a rural kid could in those days with his work. Indiana Jones was a bit of a thrill, but thanks to Lucasfilm he didnt last long on that title.

Another big Byrne moment for me---Alberta Report magazine from about 1983 or 84. Byrne supplied a custom cover and some interior artwork for a story about him. I was thrilled to find out he grew up here in Calgary, and went to school at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, as I (later on) did (although he took art and I studied industrial mechanics). He was a bit of a hero and a bit of inspiration at the time, and that article just reinforced that notion. I even tried to emulate his art style at the time...despite my own style being closer to Jack Kirby/Ron Frenz.

I was overjoyed to see him "defect" to DC, and really liked his early Superman stuff. Unfortunately, it was about this era that his now infamous ego-trip began, and his work started suffering for it. Soon it seemed nobody wanted him to work for them anymore...although, this may have been more due to his style falling out of synch with the overdone MacFarlane (another Calgarian!) and Liefield crud.

I pretty much abandoned comics then, for a myriad of reasons. Getting back into them in a small way a few years back when I started working with people in the industry. I stumbled across Byrnes IDW Romulan Spotlight issue, and was happy to see the old Byrne shine through there. He has since done a ton of Trek stuff for IDW, and I am lapping it up like water in the desert!!!!

I first liked his work on Iron fist and some of his pre FF work before he became the regular series writer/artist.

His run on X-men was stellar Classic X-men and paired up with Terry Austin his artwork was top form.

His run on the FF was truly my Fave and Last year I pulled out his run and re read it. really great stuff since Lee and kirby.

Loved his short stint on the Hulk probably one of my favs.

Superman was really good and it brought me back to reading the man of steel although I personally liked Jerry Ordway's run on Superman a bit more during that time.

His She-Hulk run was fun but Bryne and his ego was a bit much and I really thought he lost it after that. never liked any of his work when he wasn't working for DC or marvel.

I agree with you on Terry Austin, although I think Jerry Ordway did a good job over Byrne as well. Not fond of Byrne inking his own stuff really.

Loved that short run on Cap. Also have a soft spot for Claremont and Byrne on Team-up. Captain Britain and Red Sonja in particular.

There was a period of time when it looked like he was doing his inking with a big freakin' magic marker. Sloppy.

I really enjoyed his Cap run with Roger Stern. Fantastic stuff. If only they had stayed longer. The Baron Blood two-parter and the origin issue are just classic.

I enjoyed his Superman and Action run, although I disagreed on his controversial execution of the Phantom Zone characters. He created a lot of baggage for Superman and left. It almost seemed like he did that on purpose.

It seems his ego and on-line tirades have made him somewhat radioactive to DC and Marvel now. They don't seem to be receptive to his working for them.

Jim Lee is very good, but I'd take Byrne/ Austin ,Adams/Goirdano, Perez/Tanghal, Swan/Anderson, Kane, Lopez/Goirdano, Frank over him any day.

These teams art is as dynamic or more so than Lee/ Williamson, but have more emotional range. Telling stories in all about anger, angst, gritted teeth and rage.

Agreed on the white collars and stuff.., figured it was just an '80s type style change, but REALLY hated Johnny's punkish haircut. Eww.

I never really followed X-Men, but the West Coast Avengers was a good run (HATED all the Al Milgrom art.. drained ALL my interest in the series..).

I didn't really follow FF at that time, but most folks I've talked to have said the stories lacked a lot of excitement.
