Could DC do a comic based on thier cartoon heroes?

maybe a hanna barbera world of super adventure version of the JLA
Space Ghost, Herculoids,Birdman, Galaxy Trio, Frankenstien Jr.

You could have Shazzan and those kids would be like Johnny Thunder in JSA

Maybe Blue Falcon and Dynomutt for some comic relief ala Plastic man.

    am I missing anyone?

The Impossibles, Samson & Goliath, Jonny Quest & Team Quest, Mighty Mightor, Moby Dick, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kids...

I always thought a team-up comic would have been nice. They rarely did it...I seem to recall Space Ghost meeting Dino Boy once (back when Archie had the H-B license). And I think at least an Outer Space crossover would be cool.

Dunno where the rights are for all these though...even though they are all Hanna-Barbera properties, they made be tied up at various companies etc. DC did that really good Space Ghost series a few years ago, announced a second series that never happened. Jonny Quest was announced and never appeared either. I'm guessing it's a license issue, because the SG book did pretty well. And Scooby-Doo sells well, so why not any other H-B books?

        Hmmmm....

I think you could do a comic about these characters quite well. Trick would be getting them into the hands of people who would like them. The comic shop crowd kight, but they tend to be fickle. You'd need actual kids and such buying them, so having them in bookstores or corner stores would help.

....and personally I'd love to see a SWATKats comic, 'specially if it was done as well as the second season of the show. (Maybe doing some of the stories they were planning for the third season.)

Well, BOOM Studios is making that effort with their Pixar & Muppet Show books, which are doing very well I understand. And Archie certainly has a handle on selling to other outlets. Borders + Barnes & Noble still sell comics. There are outlets available...plus a lot of the Gold Key & Dell stuff would still be ok if they republished it in a digest-size book or graphic novel, similar to what Marvel did with Spider-Girl. I can't see it not selling with the proper promotion. There have to be lots of parents out there who would be happy to buy a Yogi Bear or Flintstones book for their kids.

As for the heroes, the DC Space Ghost series certainly wasn't aimed at kids, and it sold pretty well if I remember correctly- wasn't there a second printing or two? And Alex Ross covers?

Shouldn't really be a liscense issue since DC and Hanna Barbera are under the WB umbrella

I don't see how this hasn't been jumped on. These cartoons play on Boomerang. So young kids watch and know them. Come on a Space Ghost movie would be awesome!!!!

I don't think that matters- for instance Space Ghost could be licensed to a TV or movie deal somewhere and part of that contract includes merchandising rights to published material, perhaps intending book novelizations, etc, but probably hamstringing comic books as well. Ditto Jonny Quest. Or perhaps a Hanna-Barbera character is tied up in development for an updated series so is unavailable until that series comes through. Or the rights came as part of a package deal that was sold to a toy division of a company that also has a publishing division.

That stuff can get screwy.Legal dept/licensing divisions don't always jibe with the creative side. Look at Marvel and Fantastic Four/Human Torch cartoon debacle that gave us Herbie the Robot. Or the Adam West Batman series - the show is owned by Fox but the characters are owned by Warner, effectively denying a DVD set being released any time soon. And in fact not all of the characters on the show are even owned by Warner- King Tut for example is a Fox owned property, which is why he never appeared in the comics before...and even the recent King Tut who showed up in Batman Confidential is based on the historical figure, not the TV villain.

^^^ Since DC already did a Space Ghost miniseries, they already have inside access to the characters. I'm guesing its not financially sound to do another or persue other HB characters since we have seen nothing else. And I seriously doubt we'd ever see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids. Yeesh.

DC WAS doing a lot of the HB/WB characters in comic form back in the early 00's. Did thry all get cancelled?

                      Archies / Hanna-Barbera

I thought maybe 10 or 12 years ago Archie comics had licensed the Hanna- Barbera characters, like Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi, Scooby Doo, The Impossibles, and a few others. I think there were like four titles. It didn't last very long, and then Scooby Doo moved over to DC with a Cartoon Network banner on top. The others just went away. Survival of the fittest, I guess. It was like around '96, '97, '98...somewhere around there. I got the first issue of The Flintsones, and the issue of The Impossibles...But maybe Johnny DC could do some of the other classic characters...

^^ yeah, that's right around the time Warner Bros bought Turner thru which they took over the HB stuff.
